Viet Cong defections rise as U.S. jets suffer losses

Viet Cong troops are defecting to the South Vietnamese government in small armed units, a Vietnamese military spokesman said. Over the past week 373 defections occurred with weapons including a light machine gun 66 rifles and 55 grenades. An American pilot was reportedly captured after an F4C Phantom was shot down over North Vietnam. SAC B52s bombed positions near Saigon and Hanoi area as US air losses mount.

Cancer Society elects officers in Washington County

The Washington County chapter of the American Cancer Society names Mr. and Mrs. Joe Knotek as chairman and vice-chairman. Other officers include Mrs. Ward Benson secretary, Geraldine Schulty treasurer, Juanita Hering crusade treasurer, and Rev. Dale E. Brehmer crusade chairman. Directors include Mrs. John Shebeck Riverside, Rev. Arthur Peters West Chester, and Mac Wallace Ainsworth. The state meeting is in Des Moines on Nov 13, with county crusade planned for next April.

Refugee boats bring Cuban exiles to Key West

Cuban children among the more than 700 refugees reaching the United States as evacuations under Castro's open door continue. Coast Guard records show 207 men 235 women and 189 children arrived since Oct 7 with more boats on the way. Negotiations via the Swiss Embassy in Havana could yield a mass transfer this week.

Washington reports HUAC chief investigator Donald Appell said the Ku Klux Klan infiltrated some police departments while stressing the overwhelming majority of Southern lawmen were not members or sympathizers. Chairman Edwin Willis opened the hearings warning against witness intimidation and affirmed constitutional protections. Johnson walks over a mile at Bethesda Hospital grounds

President Johnson walked more than a mile around the Bethesda Naval Hospital grounds today, saying he felt pretty good after a shorter, tiring walk Monday. He slept moderately well last night but still felt abdominal pain from his operation 12 days ago, which doctors consider normal.

Schrader admits to Washington thefts

Washington police say Jerry L. Schrader 18 of Richland and formerly of Ainsworth was caught for breaking and entering in Ollie. He admitted to burglaries at the J L Mobil station and Robertsons Salon of Beauty in Washington. A motor bike from J L Mobil was recovered.

Lone Tree man dies in farming accident near West Branch

Arnold Lee Doerres 26 of Lone Tree died when a tractor overturned while loading soybeans at work for Hills Grain and Feed near West Branch. He was born July 31, 1939, and survived by his wife Helen Berg, infant son Darrin, his parents, a brother Robert, and two sisters. Funeral Thursday at St. Marys Lone Tree with rosary Wednesday evening.

Washington YMCA to Begin Remodeling Soon

The Washington YMCA board, led by president Richard H. McCleery, approved contracting with low bidders for modernization. Bids were higher than expected, but funds from the Howard B. Gardner estate will support construction. Architect Charles Richardson advised bids on October 5 were reasonable. work could start next week with construction by Frantz Construction Co.

Death of Marvin B. Mathess Near Wellman

Marvin B. Mathess died Monday evening at his home near Wellman after a six months illness. Services will be Wednesday at 1 30 p.m. in Pleasant Hill Church Joetown with Rev Lloyd Bauer officiating. Burial will be there. He was born December 19 1896 in Iowa City son of John and Elizabeth Mathess. He married Ida Dawson July 24 1913 and they lived much of their married life in Iowa County. He is survived by his wife one daughter Mida one son Marlo three grandchildren and two brothers Norval and Merle of Iowa City.

Washington County 4-H Convention Elects Council Members

The 1965 Washington County 4-H Convention at Washington High School auditorium on October 30 will elect a 10 member County 4-H Council from sixteen candidates. Candidates include Jerry Combs and Galen Howsare among others. Miss Patricia Blarton will speak and assist in installing new council members. Attendance eligibility requires clubs have 75 percent membership present.
