Communist led unions end plan for a general Paris strike after Gen Charles De Gaulle's sweeping municipal election victory. Troop reinforcements were sent as fears of unrest rose. De Gaulle secured about 40 percent nationwide, around 1 percent in Paris, with communists at roughly 36 percent.
Gen Charles de Gaulle emerges as a leading political force in France after a six month old anti-leftist rally wins 41.5 percent of over 4 million votes. Communists at 29.7 percent, Ramadier socialists 20.6, MRP 8.3. Ramadier reelected mayor in Decazeville as national assembly terms continue.
Stewart P T A collected 15 379 pounds of waste paper Saturday earning 63 88. Third grade won first prize and fourth grade second. Women volunteers included Mrs Homer Godwin chairwoman and several Stewar t pupils assisted. The item notes Wesleyan University founded the first US agriculture experiment station in 1878.
Thirty seven rescued passengers say the Bermuda Sky Queen was grossly overcrowded as the ill fated four engine airliner ran out of fuel near mid Atlantic. Burlington Iowa authorities probe a blaze that razed half the stockyards of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy yards. The fire cut railroad traffic, damaged J P Squire Co offices, and may have caused millions in losses. Firemen battled flames for hours, with one spokesman blaming a tossed match on hay.
Eighty thousand Chicagoans gathered at Soldier Field to honor the first Chicago area war dead returned from overseas. Ten flag draped caskets bearing servicemen and civilians from Pearl Harbor Wake Island and Iwo Jima were wheeled onto the field as dignitaries led prayers. The event honored all fallen during the war with remarks by Rear Adm. James H. Foskett and Mayor Martin Kennelly.

Raymond Dawson paid 12.50 and costs on intoxication charge while Grant Mc Kune was fined 1.00 for improper parking before Mayor Glenn Mace in police court.
At the United Nations General Assembly in New York Vishinsky denounced the American Korea elections plan as a move to expand U S influence. He urged the UN to expel Anglo American troops from Greece and scrap Western peacekeeping, accusing Washington of meddling and intimidation. He proposed immediate withdrawal of Soviet and American forces from Greece without conditions.
The Iowa conservation commission announced a two day pheasant season from November 11 to 20 in 66 counties with hours noon to 4 pm and a daily bag limit of two. An 85 percent population drop prompted the drastic cut. A 45 day quail season is planned for 34 counties, with varying start dates and a bag limit of eight.
William Thomas of Crawfordsville began a fifteen day term in the county jail today after being sentenced by Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee. He was apprehended on an assault charge referred by his wife.
Richard A. Stewart, attorney for petitioners, files a motion in the county clerk's office to strike several names from the answer to the petition for annexation. The filing cites prior separate answers dated Oct 6 and Oct 11 and asks removal of nonappearers and nonparties, along with related allegations deemed irrelevant. The action concerns land annexation north of Washington and seeks to simplify the respondent list and pleadings.
Kate Hill gave the thank offering address at the United Presbyterian church morning service. Donations totaled 1050 dollars. Miss Hill, retired in 1942 after 51 years of missionary service in India, spoke of her work. Mrs Kleese offered the bank offering prayer. Junior missionary society members passed the plates.
Maynard L. Brown marks 27 years in the Washington business community since opening Brown's Tire Shop at 114 East Washington on October 20, 1920. The shop offered Pennsylvania Vacuum Cup tires and tire repair with vulcanizing, with a four year Army Air Forces hiatus. An advertisement reflects on the early days of tire and auto business.
Mrs. Laticia Orr French a Washington resident since 1902 died at Washington county hospital after a fall caused a fractured hip. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at Sherman’s funeral home with Basil McBee in charge and burial in Oak Mound cemetery Sandwich IL. Mrs. French survived by her stepson Paul O French and stepdaughter Mary French in Washington.
Government data show industrial employment at 43,000,000 and average weekly wages at 50.42 in September. Construction started about 88,000 new homes, the most in 20 years, while unemployment compensation claims fell to a postwar low as the Christmas period approaches.
A five member Iowa State College team won the intercollegiate live stock judging contest at the 1947 American Royal in Kansas City. They scored 4 438 points to lead 17 colleges with team members David Tingrey Gail Danielson Donald Shirt Stanley Anderson and Ed Lideaul coached by Vern Kerehnberger. Ames team led in sheep judging and placed second in cattle and hog divisions. Nebraska fifth behind Kansas State Wisconsin Missouri. Ned Raun of Minches Nebraska was high man with 21 points.
Movie producer Jack L. Warner testified at a House hearing that he had fired six writers for attempting to inject un American ideas into Warner Brothers scripts. He denied Communist influence in his films and said no American movie promotes forcible overthrow of the government.
John Earnest Wagner aged two years eight months died when struck by a truck his father used to haul corn to the crib on the family farm northeast of Ainsworth. Survived by parents sister Linda Lucille Ira Allen, plus maternal and paternal grandparents. Funeral at 2 30 Wednesday at the Methodist church with Rev. Fred E. Miller. burial at Im Grove cemetery. arrangements by Jones Funeral Home.
