Sally McNeill Lyon aged 18 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs Homer Lyon, died after choking while playing with her older brother in Des Moines. Mr Lyon works in the legal department of the state unemployment compensation commission.
A baby boy named Ronald Pedro Hall was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hall in Des Moines. Doctors report the infant as eleven sixteenths Negro, four sixteenths white, and one sixteenth American Indian. This first child of the couple, ages 23 and 19, is described as a yellow-hair blue-eyed white-skinned infant with mixed ancestry.
Fire at the Plymouth Processing Co plant on the Fort Dodge outskirts destroys a $250,000 soybean mill. Cause undetermined. Workers first spotted flames in a warehouse and tried to combat the blaze with on site equipment while awaiting fire crews. A tank holding 8,000 gallons of soybean oil ruptured under heat and fed the fire.
Hartford. Wallace Bricker 57 fell forty feet into three feet of water as the platform broke while helping clean a farm well. He died shortly after. Two companions pulled him from the well as Francis Maxwell descended by rope with Artemus Boutson holding him to the surface.
Ames Iowa State and Drake University students planned a football feud involving a Great Dane mascot. Drake students from Des Moines chased a large dog while Cyclone cheerleaders said no mascot was used this year. Drake drivers returned defeated after hair clipping incidents with the Des Moines caravan.
In Cedar Rapids Cornell college students placed a flag on Coe College’s flagpole proclaiming Cornell beat Coe. They allegedly traveled from Mt. Vernon before dawn to work the pole and then painted six foot whitewash letters spelling beat Coe on sidewalks in front of the Coe chapel. A Midwest conference game between Cornell and Coe is set for Saturday at Coe field.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam and County Attorney Richard A. Stewart plan to transport Roy Furman of Wellman and Louis Glick of Iowa City to Sigourney this afternoon for a court appearance before Judge J. G. Patterson. The pair admitted taking A. M. Gardner’s car from Wellman last Friday and driving it to Iowa City where it was found wrecked. They face possible county jail or state prison terms with judge discretion guiding sentencing. Varnian, frequent in court, is expected to receive a term in Anamosa.
President Roosevelt said his proclamation on belligerent submarine operations covers waters within three miles of the coast but may extend to U S territorial waters up to 1,000 miles in certain circumstances. He noted the definition depends on the situation and warned submarines and surface ships are not in the same category.
OsKaloosa Iowa on October 20 Warren O Connor 18 and Dean Lantz 20 both of Iowa City were arrested in a rooming house while being questioned in connection with a Muscatine filling station holdup yesterday in which attendant Charles Pall was shot through the shoulder and suig led.
Members of the Methodist church and friends convene for a 100th anniversary dinner in the church basement at 6:30 this evening. The event includes a cooperative potluck, an after dinner program in the basement, and an auditorium tableau on the church’s organization. U. S. Smith of Perry, pastor of the Washington church, will speak and lead a primary address.
The city street department announces a fall clean-up for tin cans starting Tuesday, October 24. Residents should place cans in burlap sacks or similar containers and leave them in the alley or on the terrace near the street. scattered cans will not be collected.
A large Saturday marching band contest at Case Field in Washington draws about 1,000 people including 600 student participants from Moravia Mount Pleasant West Liberty and other towns. Twelve high school bands compete across Class C B and A with baton twirlers opening at 1 30 pm and first two ratings announced.
The sheriff reports seven driving licenses sent from Des Moines for applicants in the county were undeliverable. Recipients include Paul Failyer and Robert E. Young of Brighton and residents from Washington A. W. Ewing route one Mrs. Mary Mc Graw Ella A. Wiese Henry J. Yoder route two and Mrs. Arthur E. Young 2915 Connecticn avenue. One address appears to be Washington D C rather than Washington Iowa.
The state board of parole approved paroles effective December for 24 Fort Madison inmates and 30 Anamosa reformatory convicts. Among those paroled are Charles Schneider and Ross Harris of Washington County, both sentenced for forgery to not more than 100 years.
Eleven new automobiles trucks and trailers were registered and licensed in Washington county in the past week. Washington county Red Cross begins its annual membership drive aiming for 2000 members, up from 1300 last year. President Roger Sherman and roll call chair Mrs. Rose Reid organize headquarters with plans to complete by Thanksgiving and include a Nov. 12 Red Cross sermon push through county ministers.
War department measures to more than double National Guard training include eight drills per month from Oct 15 to Jan 31 and seven days of special training over three and a half months. Captain Brown reports four extra drills this month and eight each in November December and January with standard pay.

Fifty six Washington county farmers raised Pfister 360 corn averaging over 100 bushels per acre this year. The Walden Farm of Keota promotes the variety and cites a 157.61 bushel per acre figure on the Harold Palmer farm near Keota as a possible world record. Tests follow Iowa Corn and Small Grain Growers rules with ten acre plots, 50 hills per acre, and moisture adjusted to 15 percent.
Berlin reports Hitler called Nazi ambassadors to Italy, Turkey, and Russia to Berlin for conferences on Germany's next move amid Turkey's signing of a mutual aid pact with Britain and France. London says German losses in Poland are far higher than official claims, while Scottish air operations see German planes vanish near the Firth of Scotland and new raid warnings issued.
Chairman Wayne Norman of the Washington county soil conservation committees announced a district meeting in Washington next Tuesday as part of six statewide sessions. About 50 people from 15 to 17 southeastern Iowa counties will gather for morning and afternoon sessions to plan 1940 data for farm allotments and to review wheat acreage parity payments and crop insurance under the federal program. State committee members are expected to attend.
Sheriff H M Putnam said owners of copper lightning rod cable held as evidence in a county case can now reclaim the material. Lawrence Adibe and Vernon Shepherd pleaded guilty in Fairfield to thefts of copper cable from severed buildings. Adibe is sent to the Anamosa reformary for up to five years. Shepherd to the Fort Madison penitentiary for a similar term.
