Keota Bank Robber Linked to Minnesota Heist in Iowa

Authorities across Washington county and Keokuk area hunt for Charles Wallerich after a series of bank robberies tied to a Minnesota suspect. The Keota theft yielded 6308 dollars, while a Lester Prairie crime involved an 8238 dollar haul. The Wardells were seized and later released. Wallerich reportedly escaped from University Hospitals Iowa City and was a former inmate at Fort Madison.

Tour of Homes Event Set for Friday in Washington

The Washington County Extension Home Economics program announces a Friday tour of homes near Oct. 21. Homes feature new builds, remodels, and additions with points of interest for gracious living. Booklets are at the extension office and tours proceed in any order with half hour groupings. Morning open houses list Leon Hillman, James Lloyd, Carlton Ma, Gifford Morrison, and Leon Hulsman residences. Afternoon houses include Henry Berdo, Maurice Crawford, Richard Wiley, and Wellman Rural Route properties.

Auction at United Presbyterian HomeRaises Over 5500

The two way auction at the United Presbyterian Home last week raised over 5500 for the building fund. George Kerr reported 5486.59 received so far with more gifts to come. He thanked contributors, bid ders, and committee workers. A Kiwanis food stand netted 365, the raft stand 307 from souvenir bricks with 400 pledged. Karl Schmidt built a greenhouse, and a garden tractor with attachments was donated. Livestock sales brought in 150 with more to report.

Volunteers mobilize 150 Job Corps trainees for Belmond cleanup

Belmond Iowa crowds assist in a major cleanup as 2,000 to 3,000 volunteers including many students work on rebuilding after a tornado. About 150 Job Corps trainees from Missouri and Wisconsin join late today and Thursday, housed at Fort and transported by Iowa National Guard trucks for 10 days to two weeks.

Mount Pleasant Lawyer Eugene McCoid Dies

Eugene McCoid, 66, a Mt Pleasant attorney since 1925 and former Hen County Republican chairman, dies Tuesday. He served on the Mount Pleasant School Board and is survived by his widow, a son, and a daughter. Funeral services set for 10 30 a.m. Thursday.

Bishop Hayes Resigns as Davenport Diocese Leader

The Most Reverend Ralph L. Hayes resigns as Bishop of Davenport effective immediately after Pope Paul VI accepted the resignation. The 82 year old prelate, appointed in 1944, remains in Davenport as administrators are chosen by five diocesan consultors who will elect an administrator until a successor is named. The meeting of consultors is set at the Chancery Office Friday morning.

Viet battle in central highlands yields 142 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese deaths

A two part Vietminh clash in the central highlands reported 142 enemy killed in pre dawn and mid day actions near Nong Son and 35 miles north of Saigon.
