Edward Peiffer of rural Keota retraced World War II service with the 34th Infantry Division on a three week tour of Europe and Africa. From New York’s Kennedy Airport September 21, he traveled to Tunis Rome and London visiting battle sites cemeteries and landmarks. He commented on rebuilding after the war Marshall Plan and noted a 31 hour travel day due to time changes.

Joseph Paul Shelangoski 56 of Pleasant Plain died when a tractor overturned on him in a ditch two miles south of town. He was a World War II veteran and road maintainer for Washington County. CHICAGO 37 laid out 37 newspaper photographers and two newspapers earned trophies in the Inland Daily Press Association 24th Annual News Picture Contest judged from 1957 entries. Top honors go to staff photographer Jack Gillis for Remorse, with Dale Stierman and Jim Shaffer among winners in multiple divisions. Dallas Kinney took prizes for both feature and spot news images, while George Koshollek won in color for Journey to Wilderness.
