Des Moines reports district court judges in Polk county tightened divorce procedures to curb quick divorces. The amended rule delays advancement toward trial for 10 days after filing, requiring stricter adherence and multiple steps beyond a single witness petition.
Mrs. John Prollinger age 83 was found dead in her home five miles northwest of Fort Madison by neighbor Mrs. Sam Faeth. She had been dead several days and her cat and five chickens had starved. She lived alone.
Waterloo resident Isadore Patterson shot an enormous eagle described as a 30 pound bird with a seven foot wingspan northwest of Denver. He paid a fine of 10 dollars and 5.80 dollars costs as imposed by Justice John Borresen at Cedar Falls. State conservation officer John C. Jago cited both state and federal laws against the act.
Silas Merritt argued he was sober at his arrest in Des Moines. The jailer labeled the charge intoxication. Merritt proved his claim by producing an upper dental plate from his pocket, admitting guilt and receiving twenty days in jail.
President Raymond M. Hughes of Iowa State College received an indefinite leave of absence from the Iowa Board of Education to restore his health.
Clarinda Elzie Ray failed to appear in court on a chicken stealing charge. As a result his parents faced losing their home after mortgaging it to post bond. Ray vanished after release and has not shown up.
Sioux City victim Francis Reynolds, secretary of the Peerless Vendor Co., lay wounded as Woodbury County authorities hunted two robbers who escaped with about 4600 dollars after a shooting near Correctionville. Friends say another attempted road obstruction occurred two weeks earlier near Ida Grove as Reynolds carried a large sum. Reynolds had purchased a 5000 dollar life policy with double indemnity after the earlier robbery attempt.
Hancock county authorities concluded Elmer Davis 27 shot himself in the heart then ran about 200 feet before dying. The shotgun used was found only after hours of searching. Davis lived on a farm near Woden.
Mrs. Mary G. Wildes, 51, died from asphyxiation in a gas range incident at her Waterloo home. Husband Ernest E. Wildes, 64, was revived after firefighters treated him with oxygen. effort also made to revive Mrs. Wildes. City units arrived at 1:56 am.
Carl H. Mayer and his son Richard from Keota shop together this morning. They visited local merchants and browsed goods in a brief daytime outing.
Geneva dispatch reports the League of Nations penalties committee endorsing a total boycott of Italian goods effective October 31. The proposal moves to the full committee for final adoption tonight as tensions rise over potential Italian actions in the Mediterranean. Mrs Reno Schmidt of Grundy Center is recovering after a bee sting caused her entire body to swell and become infected. The incident highlights the danger of allergic reactions and infection after stings.
The funeral for Mrs. Martha Lauderman, who died at her home on East Madison Street after a long illness, will be held at 10 o clock Monday at L A Jones funeral home. Rev. A A Vinz will officiate. Burial follows at Elm Grove cemetery. Born December 21 1856 in Muscatine she married Henry Lauderman in 1875. They farmed in Muscatine and Louisa counties before moving to a farm near Washington in 1920. Surviving daughters are Mrs J H Thompson and Mrs Ed Mickelson. three children preceded her in death. twenty four grandchildren and twenty eight great grandchildren. She was a Baptist church member.
Under President Dwyer the U s Men commit tee lays plans for the grand finale Amateur Night at the State Theatre next Wednesday. The arrangements committee includes Sherman Lemmon Winga and Sizer with talent and judging committees coordinating surprise acts and a five to one point system for votes. Crowd handling and finances are managed by the ticket committee and exchequer keepers while McFarlane and Arthur serve as official ticket takers.
Prof. George R R Davies of the University of Iowa notes England outpaced the U S in postwar recovery due to currency management a protective tariff stance relief administration and experienced bankers and industrialists He says currency stability reduced uncertainty boosting confidence and that Civil Service aided relief measures keep unemployment under two million with foreign trade improving and further gains possible if war is avoided.
Helena suffers a major quake with two deaths and about 500000 in damage. Several buildings collapsed including Clark Coil and a three story National Biscuit structure. Charles Siggerink and David Harris died from injuries. Guards patrolled the stricken area to prevent looting.
John E. Powell of Keota was taken to Washington county hospital at noon after a corn picking accident on his farm six miles northeast of Keota in Seventy six township. His right hand was badly torn and mangled but doctors hoped it could be saved.
In Worcester Massachusetts a birthday dinner was held for J. Edward Smith of Leicester and Mrs. James Beaumont of Paxton, believed to be the oldest twins in New England. The event occurred at the home of their nephew and marked their List birthday with family honors.
In Blytheville Arkansas bank liquidators report about 200 persons have failed to call for a 35 percent dividend check at a default bank. The observation suggests residents may have cash on hand rather than needing the payout.

Des Moines reports shows the state and federal authorities disputing final control of which WPA projects proceed funded from a pool. Iowa officials say appropriations have been cut from initial approvals to a final quota and that responsibility lies with state engineers and director L S Hill. Relief caseload in September rose to 34 459 from 33 598 in August with increases in family aid and declines in transient relief, affecting numerous counties including Adair Adams Cerro Gordo Cherokee Dubuque Floyd Fremont Guthrie Hamilton Harrison Humboldt Johnson Keokuk Lee Mills O Brien Plymouth Pottawattamie Ringgold Sioux Wapello Wayne Winneshiek Woodbury Wright.
Yakima staff writer reports Ian MacIlvor ignited by striking a match on a building causing a flash and a blaze that climbed two stories. MacIlvor suffered minor burns. Investigators found a gas pipe leak contributed to the incident.
In Boston a grocer set a trap in his store but woke to a scene of terror. Mrs Mary Kelhan, who lives upstairs, heard cries and rushed downstairs to discover the trap contained not a mouse but the grocer's cat.
Atlantic City October 19. A fight broke out between John Lewis head of the mine workers union and William Hutcheson head of the carpenters union at the AFL convention. Proceedings halted as blows were exchanged during a debate on an industrial union for rubber workers. Hutcheson bloodied from the mouth after Lewis struck.
South Second avenue is now used for automobile travel and stands as the town’s best surfaced street. It was the first to receive rock coating and the finishing rock chips and sand. Other streets are to be opened as completed, with several likely before next week if asphalt arrives. East Van Buren toward the athletic field may finish in time for next Friday’s Washington Ottumwa high school game.
