Voter registration deadline nears in Iowa counties

Final week to register for the November 2 general election with Saturday October 23 as the deadline. Washington County auditor Walter Schroeder says the courthouse will stay open to sign up voters until 5 p.m. and mobile registrars are available countywide. In Keota, volunteer firefighters have fought multiple blazes including on Leonard Sieren Jim Snakenburg Bob McDowell farms a car at Mike Flynn home and a tree at Harper.

Where's 016163 Washington Mt Pleasant ball unclaimed

The Evening Journal reports ticket stub 016163 won the game ball bestowed by the De-Mon Booster Club after the Washington Mt Pleasant football game on Friday night. WHS Athletic Director Tom English says the球 remains unclaimed and is available at the high school office to the bearer of the winning number.

Snow Likely Across Iowa By Tuesday

A weather system moving from the Plains could bring rare October snow across much of Iowa by Tuesday. Temperatures were in the 20s to 30s with early light flurries reported in extreme northwest Iowa as the National Weather Service warned of potential record snowfalls.

Fourteen named to 4-H Council from Washington County

Ten new 4-H Washington County Council members were elected at the 4-H Convention Saturday evening at the Washington Community Center. Americans win 1976 Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry

Tank car explosions force evacuations in Clifford Michigan

A Chessie and Ohio freight train derailment near Clifford Michigan triggered two tank car explosions releasing Acrynite a flammable poisonous chemical. Authorities evacuated a 10 square mile area sending 472 residents to North Branch with ongoing measures including bus evacuations and road closures as chemical experts prepared to respond and Civil Defense aided the operation.

Jury seats five men seven women for Adcock trial

A five man seven woman jury was chosen in the Homer R. Adcock federal trial in Des Moines. Judge William C. Keota sisters injured in Saturday one car crash

Two rural Keota youths were hospitalized Saturday after a one car accident on a gravel road six miles southwest of Keota. Angie Horning 18 and Crystal Horning 8 were treated at Keokuk County Hospital in Sigourney for head injuries and facial lacerations. They are the daughters of Charles and Mrs. Horning.

Weather turns to snow overnight into Tuesday

Occasional rain is likely tonight with a mix of rain and snow possible late tonight and Tuesday. Low temperatures dip to the mid 30s, with highs Tuesday in the upper 30s. Southeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Rain chances are around 70 percent tonight and on Tuesday.

Jail Breaker Allen Chance Recaptured After Escape

Allen Lee Chance was returned to Washington County jail after escaping from the work release section Saturday morning. He broke through a jail window and was found nearby near the McCreedy Building. Chance, held on a 20 day term, faced a felony charge with possible up to one year in a reformatory or state penitentiary.

Break-in at Gamble Store in Brighton Under Investigation

Saturday morning officers investigated a break-in at the Gamble Store in Brighton. Entry was gained through the roof Friday night, with about $2,500 in merchandise cash and checks taken. Guns and tools were found stacked inside, suggesting the thief planned to return but fled abruptly.
