Custodial home shortage feared in Iowa as beds decline
DES MOINES IDPA state officials warn of a looming shortage after 51 custodial homes closed reducing beds by 692 while only two new homes opened for 65 beds. Despite 36 nursing homes closing, 31 new ones opened, netting 635 beds. The core issue is low state pay of 180 dollars per patient monthly, with 70 percent government aid, squeezing operators. Officials discuss raising compensation while aging standards and federal scrutiny loom for Medicaid and elder care funding.
