Viet Cong ambush cripples U.S. battalion near Saigon
In northwest of Saigon a Viet Cong ambush killed 58 Americans including battalion commander Lt. Col. Terry Allen Jr and Maj. Donald Holleder as 61 were wounded. The attack followed heavy air losses over North Vietnam with 795 planes lost since the year began. Forces also disrupted a Communist plan to seize Saigon and uncovered large weapon caches. The Hai Lang forest operation tracked Hanoi's 9th Regiment with light contact and big weapons stores found.

Fires sweep Southern California from arson fears
Flames raged along a four mile front in Los Padres National Forest with 7 000 acres burned in Ventura County and 1 000 acres in the watershed. Three Simi Valley High students admitted starting a four acre fire near the school. Police hunted three long haired youths seen in the area as nine hundred firefighters fought erratic winds and rugged terrain. One death blamed on the fires. Losses estimated at 1 million. Chatsworth blaze had charred 25 000 acres and destroyed 63 structures including 22 homes before containment late Tuesday night.
