Federal grand jury indicted Democratic Reps. Thomas F. Johnson of Maryland and Frank W. Boykin of Alabama along with two others for conspiracy and conflict of interest in a Maryland savings and loan scandal. They allegedly sought to sway the Justice Department to drop fraud charges against J. Kenneth Edlin, who had been convicted. Edlin and Miami attorney William L. Robinson were the co-defendants. Johnson sought re election while Boykin denied any payoff.

Cancer Blood Substance May Signal New Discovery
Dr Edward D McLaughlin announced at the American College of Surgeons meeting that a blood substance could distinguish between healthy individuals and cancer patients. In tests on 30 healthy people 22 pregnant or postpartum women and 25 with other illnesses the substance varied widely. Cancer patients showed markedly lower levels while many non cancerous cases showed higher amounts suggesting a potential second factor in cancer development.
