Washington store owner Leo Schumacher testified before the Iowa legislative investigating committee in Des Moines that $500 was paid May 14 1958 to him and $2 500 to an unnamed recipient for commissions earned as Loveless municipal supplies salesmen. The funds were connected to Loveless for Governor campaign debts dating to 1956. The committee released a statement summarizing Schumacher's testimony and debates among lawmakers followed by executive session.
Washington Cub Scouts received awards at a Pack Meeting in the VFW hall Thursday night. Den five led opening ceremonies, dens two six presented skits, and den four closed. The annual meeting highlighted election of Loren Day Bob Roe and Bob Lowe to the board of directors and elected Lavon Adkins Wilma Butler Justine Hotle and Kathy Krogmeier to the women's golf association. Dues will be 42 dollars for stockholders 57.50 for associate members with junior memberships set at 15 for boys and 10 for girls.
Vice President Richard M Nixon said in Salt Lake City that GOP prospects in the farm belt are better than since 1952. He called Republicans scared but confident, predicted a Democratic collapse on corruption charges, and outlined future stops in Provo Casper Cheyenne and Denver.

Police used heavy tear gas to end a two hour riot by 70 inmates at Denver County Jail. Four guards were beaten but not seriously hurt. After 9 10 p m guards cleared the building and returned prisoners to cells. Authorities cited no clear cause with some inmates claiming protest over mistreatment. The incident occurred in the maximum security unit housing 108 of the jail’s 738 inmates.
Mrs George Wright 80 died at Washington County Hospital after a month long illness. Funeral services set for 2 30 p m Sunday at Powell Funeral Home Keota with Rev Arthur Peters officiating. Burial in Keota Cemetery. Survivors include three sons a daughter 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A head on collision on Iowa 181 near a slight hill killed Janice Pavlik and Kenneth Brewer both 19 and injured six others. Emergency responders said two were critical while others sustained a range of injuries from fractures to contusions.
A 50 year old Sabula man shot his divorced wife with a .410 shotgun in a tavern and then killed himself in her adjacent apartment. Florence Gombert Reed, 46, died after being wounded, while Leo Elroy Reed died instantly.
Tama County ASC office in Toledo named outstanding among Iowa counties for the year ending July 31. The award places Tama in the eight state ASC regional contest with offices in Adair Adams Bremer Calhoun Louisa Lyon and Washington. A plaque and individual citations will be awarded to staff and committee members.
President Eisenhower began a long campaign swing with a Cedar Rapids stop at an 80 acre Lumir Dostal farm for a national corn picking contest. A crowd near 85 000 watched as he praised GOP farm policy while noting remaining cost price pressures and farm income gains. He urged farmers to keep freedom in markets and thanked Iowa officials and supporters including Gov. Herschel Loveless.
The Washington County Farm Bureau holds its annual meeting at the Washington armory Tuesday evening October 21. A smorgasbord precedes the event and a talk by Walter Stiegelman of the University of Iowa. Officers will be elected and resolutions considered during the business session, with serving starting at 6 p.m.

He attends preevent coffees with local Democratic women, plans to join the Washington Coffee Club, meets business people, visits Kalona Riverside and Ainsworth, then returns to Washington for an 8 PM speech at the county courthouse.
A bomb exploded at Wichita airport killing Forrest Don McCuiston a Douglas Aircraft tool engineer from Tulsa. He was believed to be returning a found package from Braniff Flight 301 to the lost and found when the blast occurred in a 40 foot hall shattering plate glass and tearing through the lobby.

Cray a famed auctioneer and lightning rod salesman in Iowa and Illinois died Thursday at Mercy hospital Iowa City after a long illness. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. He was born Sept. 30, 1882 at Lone Tree to Jerimiah and Sadie Cray and lived his life in Riverside. He married Mildred Kay Blecha March 7 1905 here. Survivors include his wife two sons Wayne and Glenn one grandchild and one great grandchild.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles plans a trip to Formosa to meet Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek on the Formosa Strait crisis. He will also attend Pope Pius XII funeral rites in Rome before flying to Taipei, invited by Chiang under the mutual defense treaty. The talks will cover the crisis and Chiang's garrisons on the Quemoy and Matsu islands.
United Press International reports fair conditions in Iowa through Saturday with a northwestward warming trend. Tonight lows 33 to 40, Saturday highs 67 to 77. Sunday should continue generally fair and warmer.
