Boston bound travelers aboard a New Haven sleeper from Grand Central woke to find they were still in the station as floods halted the service. The train never left, keeping passengers stranded until conditions improved.
Petitions listing Ralph Marshall from the third ward Tom Tanner as at large candidate and Ray Minick from the first ward circulate for city council posts. Incumbents Vernon Witting Bob Arthur and Harold Mangold will not seek re election. The elected trio will join Messer Crone and McDaniel to form four year terms. Nomination papers must be filed 15 days before November 8 election day.
Weekend accidents in Iowa killed Willis Jacobsen 17 of Jesup and Louis Johnson 16 of Linton after a rollover near Jesup. Willis was ejected and pinned. Johnson trapped but alive in fair condition. A second fatal crash near Vinton killed Mr and Mrs Sidney Watkins and injured four others as a bridge collision with a semitrailer caused a fire. Emma Emmetsburg resident Mrs. W H Vaughan died after being struck by a car. Donna Isaacs 11 of Grafton died from injuries in a Rochester hospital following a Osage area crash.
The second atomic submarine, Seawolf, becomes the third U S undersea craft to carry that name marking a continued expansion of the fleet.
John Birdsall a 17 year old Des Moines student ill with incurable leukemia hosted a party for peers who donated to buy him a high fidelity record player. Seniors from North and Roosevelt High helped fund the gift and about 80 friends attended the dance with his date Sandra Banning after recent blood transfusions.
A four car crash occurred at 3 35 p m Sunday on Highway 92 half a mile west of Ainsworth as a funeral procession slowed to let a westbound vehicle pass. Katie Monson of Trenton Indiana was treated for face lacerations at Washington County Hospital. Vehicles were driven by Ernest Salladay Howard Stewart H F Monson and James M Jones. Damages were estimated at 350 950 1000 and 400 dollars respectively. The lead car stopped suddenly causing the chain collision.
Three duck hunters near Newton Iowa found a safe reported stolen June 26 from the Concrete Products Co at Prairie City. Sheriff Ed Scoville said the dial was burned off and $10 in cash was missing. The safe was discovered a mile south for Runnella.
The latest tally shows at least 484 dead as floodwaters recede across Maine to Pennsylvania. About 25 000 homeless and thousands idle as industries shut down. Connecticut bears the worst losses with 22 dead and extensive inundation of homes and industry. County 4-H approves junior cattle feeding for the year under Tom Robb. Last year, 17 pens of five head were entered. this year each pen must have five calves and starts when purchased. Calves from distant range states may be re-weighed within 15 days. Some pens have already been bought. boys should contact the extension office promptly.
A tornado struck Dale County Alabama injuring five people at Chalk Head Baptist Church during a Sunday night training union meeting. The storm demolished seven homes and three barns across the Ewell community area.
West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer is convalescing rapidly from bronchial pneumonia, a Bonn spokesman said. The 79 year old, confined to bed at his home since Oct 7, is reported to be making lively progress and doing well for a convalescent.
Cairo reports a Israeli force crossed into Egypt from the El Auja demilitarized zone accompanied by two UN truce cars and ignored a warning to stop. An Egyptian outpost fired when they crossed, and the Israelis withdrew. Egyptian positions reportedly fired on UN observers near Auja. No casualties reported.
Iowa Democratic Chairman Jake More accused Republican governors meeting in Des Moines of adopting Democratic farm price squeeze remedies. He claimed the soil fertility program copied Humphrey’s proposal and was rejected by Benson at the Agriculture Department. More warned of political motives and announced a Democratic farm conference with Harriman to close the Oct. 22 dinner.
One of six known copies of the West Texas Constitution has been acquired by the University of California. The document will be preserved in Bancroft Library on the Berkeley campus.
Slightly more than seven thousand dollars remained to reach the community chest goal. Washington reported $17,403.36 raised, $7,096.64 short of the target as canvassing continues to bring totals up to date.
Light rain fell in eastern Iowa from a storm that caused floods in the northeast. The Des Moines Weather Bureau noted rain reached as far west as Iowa with the system drifting westward Sunday night. Temperatures rose overnight with only the northwest reporting freezing temps at 32 in Sioux City. Tonight frost is expected inland as a high pressure system moves in. Low temperatures range 24 to 33 with highs 50s east to 60s west. Sunday highs ranged 54 to 64 across cities including Dubuque Burlington Ottumwa and Sioux City.
Washington high school students will attend an organ dedication program Tuesday afternoon. The public dedication for the Connsonata organ at the high school will be held at 8 p.m. John Yousling will perform the public dedication concert with representatives from high school and junior college classes present to celebrate funding contributors.
Des Moines police jailed Harry E Withers and his 15-year-old son for five days after a downtown intersection crash. Withers pleaded guilty to permitting an unlicensed minor to drive. his son pleaded guilty to failure to yield to a pedestrian. Lois Goedicke was treated and released.
The University of California reports the largest student body in the nation with about 38,000 students enrolled, surpassing other colleges and universities.
Fairfield district baton twirlers won multiple honors Saturday while in charge of the local group as Melvin Hill served as a district judge in Shenandoah. Janet McFadden Patty Sorrell and Marilyn Wilson earned top division ratings in solos and flags, with ensembles led by Darlene Nelson Sandra Batterson Margaret Young Beverly Eyestone and Katie Buck earning high marks.
Thirty six friends mobilized with ten mounted pickers fourteen tractors twenty four wagons and three elevators to harvest fifty five acres of corn for Floyd Fisher who has been ill. The effort wrapped up by noon with Mrs Fisher and others providing a hearty dinner.

Zelma Eldora Evans 70 died Sunday at University Hospital Iowa City after two weeks as patient. Riverside resident, widow of Samuel Evans, survived by five sons and five daughters. Funeral at Sorden and Adams Riverside chapel Wednesday at 2 pm with burial in Riverside cemetery. She was born December 25 1884 in Meridian Kansas and raised in Topeka. She attended the Methodist Church.
All golfers are urged to pick up their golf clubs at the Washington Golf and Country Club as Mr and Mrs Frank Melegari prepare to close the clubhouse for winter. The Melegaris will be at the club next weekend to help golfers collect clubs and equipment. They reside at 529 West Main Street with daughter Kit.
