Woman seeks damages after neighbor's suicide in kitchen
Mrs. Ella Blakely, wife of a Jefferson county farmer, sued the estate of neighbor Martin Shortal for $1,000 damages. Shortal killed himself with a skinning knife in her kitchen on March 4, 1944, using a knife belonging to the Blakely family. The Iowa supreme court indicated the case should go to a jury.

Born May 10, 1865, in Washington, he was a former farm and hotel operator there and a member of St. James Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife Mary and a brother Mike King of Rock Island.
