Thieves broke into the Montgomery Ward store in Iowa City on Sunday night and dressed entirely in stolen clothing. Their old garments were left scattered across the counters as evidence of the theft.
Sharon Iowa gears up for an old fashioned ox roast on October 18 in the school gymnasium. Utensils are pressed into service to handle the large vegetables needed for the menu.
Harry A. Ambler, 72, a Burlington attorney and investment broker, died Saturday night in a gas filled kitchen of the Burlington Launen club. The coroner reported illness and low spirits as contributing factors to the tragedy.
Residents hunt a suspected pickpocket who moved through mourners at the funeral for three boys killed in an auto accident. He allegedly relieved attendees of pocketbooks watches and valuables during the services.

Steps are being taken to perfect arrangements for the Washington county corn show to be held next month. The committee includes W. J. Roudabush county agent Vernon Witting and Leslie Richer. Plans include displaying corn at the city hall and a banquet for town and country people. The Washington Chamber of Commerce offers 50 dollars and a prize fund and cooperates in the arrangements.
October 16 forecast predicts rain and a 10 to 15 degree drop as a low pressure area over South Dakota moves southeast. Federal Meteorologist Charles D Reed says mild dry spell ends tomorrow with rain in parts of Iowa.

In Manila Gov Gen Frank Murphy led relief agencies delivering medical and food supplies to thousands made homeless by the worst typhoon here in 19 years. The storm centered on Manila with winds near 160 mph and heavy rain. vessels were beached and streets flooded as the city began recovery efforts.

Three bandits robbed the First National Bank at Hawarden yesterday of about 1500 dollars and fled as state agents from Des Moines joined local and South Dakota officers in pursuit. One suspect may be the outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd, who previously fought off lawmen at Cresco. Bank employees held as hostages were released yesterday.
Sheriff Daryl Mathers and Jl G Richardson investigated a burglary at the J. J. Fleig general store and Rubio Motor Co. Loot included about 50 dollars from the store and 20 dollars plus tools and an automatic pistol from the garage. A transient named Henry Kostal of Davenport was arrested as a suspect. fingerprints will be checked against recovered items.

Washington city council voted unanimously to revoke the Brown Mug beer license and close the establishment. The decision followed testimony from proprietor CY Streigel and officials including City Solicitor Henry Bailey County Attorney George Morrison and Night Marshal Blaine Holmes. The action stems from prior disturbances at the venue and a public nuisance charge against Streigel.

New York October 16 The inquiry board ordered acting Captain William Warnsay and four officers to show cause why their licenses should not be suspended or revoked. The Morro Castle’s officers faced criticism for delayed SOS responses failing to stop the vessel inadequate fire readiness and improper watch division. Officers named include Chief Engineer Abden Abbott Second Officer Clarence Hackney Third Officer Harold Hanson and first assistant engineer Antonio Bujal.
The Iowa Supreme Court sustained the Farm Bureau aid statute allowing county bureaus to receive annual county funds if they have a bona fide membership over 200. The decision upheld the 239 member Appanoose County bureau request for 2390 dollars after the board of supervisors initially refused.
In Munkirchen Hungary a thousand coal miners ended four and a half days of voluntary entombment after Premier Julius Goemboes secured concessions. The settlement includes a $17 217 bonus, no prosecutions, and a commission to ensure justice, as families greeted them upon leaving the pit.

Henry Vollmer, engineer in charge of work relief projects, said stripping operations to remove earth above rock at the Ralley quarry south of town will probably start within the next week. They will also build roads at the quarry site to ease rock removal and help crushed rock surfacing projects in Washington this fall.
