A formal murder charge was filed in Bremer county district court against 35 year old Stanley M Kaster of Janesville. The information alleges Kaster shot and killed Glenn Winehell a Waverly utilities guard on the night of September 7 near Ventura Heights. He was captured October 4.
Algona experiences rapid growth as construction of a war prison camp east of town accelerates. Housing is fully rented, sleeping rooms are scarce, and about 50 trailer houses have been placed with more expected. Skilled laborers and carpenters continue arriving daily while camp work advances, giving the area the look of a self contained town.
The International Harvester Quad Cities tank arsenal in Bettendorf Iowa reports absenteeism reduced to about six percent, down nearly fifty percent from two months earlier. Wendell Willkie spoke in St. Louis admitting he hopes to head the Republican ticket in 1944 if the party accepts his foreign policy and liberal domestic views. He said he aims to infuse his international cooperation doctrine and economic program into the party and build organizational support.
The deceased resided in Crawfordsville for seven years. He married Inez Johnston on October 18, 1905. Surviving relatives include two sons Norval of Burlington and Harold of Crawfordsville, and daughter Mrs Craig Nelson of Goldfield Iowa.
