Des Moines Governor Clyde Herring signed two proclamations designating October 31 as forget-me-not day to support disabled World War veterans and November 8 to 14 as national armament week.
Des Moines residents prepared for a rapid farewell to autumn colors as leaves on sumac trees and shrubs failed to persist. Miss Lillian Hethershaw of Drake University attributes the change to a summer drought and heat, noting new buds formed during warm spells have misled vegetation into showing spring growth.
Three youths from Rock Island age 17 to 18 were charged with kidnapping in Muscatine. Donald Cook 17 Maline Nil and Theodore Hain 18 were held on 2500 dollar bond by Justice Lawrence J. Perigo after being arrested Sunday night for allegedly abducting Harry Slaseger and imprisoning him in an ice house while planning to rob his store. they fled before detaining any property.
A Des Moines patrolman was fined 50 dollars after being found asleep in a downtown hotel lobby while on duty. Police Chief Alber said three officers faced punishment for failing to report for duty, including Charles W. Taylor of 3316 E Shawnee Ave.
Claude Calder of Scranton Iowa was fatally struck while napping by the roadside on Sunday. He was an employee of Johnson-McGuirey Construction, which had the road contract, not the PWA. A coroner's inquest Monday returned an accidental death verdict.
Atlantic Iowa authorities report Dorothy Darrow 17 daughter of Mr and Mrs Vern Darrow has been missing since Monday after she failed to return home from a theater outing with a Des Moines boyfriend.
Clinton and nearby youths are assembling miniature aircraft to enter in the Boy Scout air event next Monday. The models will be divided into four divisions cabin models, biplanes, monoplanes, and gliders. Entries that fly may be entered in the contest.
Daily applications pour in for Amateur Night with the first preliminary set for October 22. Vocal and instrumental contestants seek honors as Washington’s third big event of this kind offers the most prize money yet. Application blanks appear nearly every evening in the Journal and must include a $1 appearance guarantee.
In Durant Iowa a 35 year old half blood Indian, John Youngblood, stabbed and likely fatally wounded Fred Allen, a Wallace Hybrid seed corn plant foreman. Allen had tried to stop him after a disturbance in their room. Youngblood fled eastward after the attack. Allen suffered a near chest wound and injuries to his arm and back.
Rev. William J. Guinan a Davenport native and longtime priest of the Davenport diocese died at Mercy hospital at 64. Born April 14 1872 he served 35 years in six parishes including Centerville Albia Washington Parnell Clinton and most recently St Marys Davenport. Funeral at St Marys with Bishop Rohiman officiating and Rev Shanahan delivering the sermon.
Mrs Sarah Helwick and her guest Mrs Britton Clair of Rocky Bay Montana visited Mrs W B Jayne, the aunt of Mrs Helwick, in West Liberty today.
E. D. Morrison Jr. was elected president of the University of Iowa Alumni association of Washington county at a dinner and meeting last evening at the Country club. The board of directors includes Lawrence Wilson and others. 65 persons attended, with autographs gathered for a prize, diplomas awarded, and moving pictures shown of Iowa scenes and the Iowa-Illinois game.
Rev Carl W Alein relief administrator states no federal or state relief funds will be granted after October 15 1936. county funds only for rebag cases. Charles R Hockett Iowa Emergency Relief Administration orders all accounting records prepared for shipment. county has used state funds to cover two thirds of relief costs. J C Pryor notes sufficient local funds remain to cover all relief costs through remainder of 1936.
The Iowa Alumni Association secretary and extension service head spoke on university progress, mentioning new bonds, uniforms, instruments, and other changes. Dr J N Irwin of Brighton retires as president and appoints a nominating committee including Dr Worley, Harland Mead, Miss Jeanette Kyle, and Adelaide Swartzendruber. Minutes were read by Miss Helen Coffey.
United Press reports record registrations across the nation push expected total votes past the 9 million mark. A Monday evening meeting in Washington announced by Ted Brown of the Y's Men's club plans a county Boy Scout reorganization. The aim is to create separate area units for Washington Johnson and Iowa counties, each affiliating with the Iowa City setup. Troops exist in Wellman Riverside and Washington, with hopes to expand to other towns. John Lemmon and Bob Arthur serve as local leaders.
A community theatrics pageant titled The Dream of a Clown will be performed Thursday and Friday evenings October 22 and 23 at the high school auditorium. Cast includes Schuyler Livingston as leading lady and bride in elaborate white satin. Hal Williams as the clown. and numerous local residents in roles including dancers and family members. The show features a ballet number and a large ensemble, with Ralph Livingston set to sing and Henry Berdo portraying Pola Negri.
Two men broke into the Morley Iowa post office at 3:45 am, blew the safe and escaped with 50 dollars in cash and a check. They fled south in a car toward Davenport. Postmistress Iva Hempy notified Cedar Rapids postal investigators.
Night Marshal Owen Crispin fought two gunmen during a second Iowa clothing store robbery attempt in two nights. The exchange ended with the bandits fleeing, one possibly wounded, as Crispin fired six shots near a Methodist church and a private home.
Glenn Hisel, 32, of Fairfield, confessed to 13 robberies across Birmingham Fairfield Libertyville Ottumwa Keosauqua and Packwood over four years. Arrested five miles southeast of Fairfield, he pleaded guilty and received a five year sentence in the state penitentiary.
Prody Borkoski, a Brighton rural mail carrier, reported to Sheriff H M Putnam that his old mud car left at the farm Sunday night was stolen last night. The case involves a missing automobile belonging to the mail carrier with no suspects named at this time.
Reports from aviators indicate at least 30,000 people are homeless after a tornado and flood struck northern and central Luzon. Death toll tops 300 with about 500 missing and larger numbers feared as relief workers assess the damage.
