Ground breaking for three new dwellings occurred during the United Presbyterian Home homecoming in Washington Iowa along with the installation of Rev George Kerr as superintendent A street lighting project was approved and an electric lantern was dedicated in honor of Mrs Margaret Stone to compliment two lanterns on each cottage street The ceremony marked the home’s 14th anniversary and the start of plans for new cottages and site locations with participation from Harvey Allbee and Richard Stewart board officers and Dr W T McIntyre and Rev Karl Megdelsen among others

Two Boston Riots Ended by Police Crackdown
Two separate disturbances in Boston ended when police halted a 25 minute race riot at White's Stadium where 250 youths fought with knives and clubs. A later downtown surge by 400 teens sought rocker Paul Anka, injuring two teens and several officers as police dispersed the crowds.

James Allen Stigers eleven month old son of Sp-4 and Mrs Fred Stigers of 427 South Sixth Avenue died Thursday Oct 12 1961 at Washington County Hospital after three weeks illness. He was born Oct 16 1960 in De Ridder Louisiana and was a Baptist church member. Funeral services set for Saturday at 3 30 p m Sherman Eden Funeral Home with Rev Richard Peterson officiating. Survivors include his father Sp Fred F Stigers stationed at Fort Riley Kansas his mother Betty Stigers at the Washington home three brothers Ronald Daniel and Francis and grandparents Mr and Mrs Fred Stigers of Minoak IL and Mr and Mrs Earnest Crawford of Washington.

Truman Visits Rayburn Amid Health Battle in Texas
Former president Harry Truman met with his ailing friend House Speaker Sam Rayburn in Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Truman described Rayburn as 100 percent himself despite cancer and pneumonia, adding it was a pleasant five to six minute visit and that Rayburn again told him where to get off.

Louis Dalton Dies In Muscatine Hospital
Louis E. Dalton aged 78 died at 5:30 am in Muscatine General Hospital where he had been a patient. Born August 28 1876 in Letts he was a son of Patrick and Mary Dalton. He married Bell Williamson in 1898 who died in 1955. Survivors include four daughters three from West Liberty one from Letts, seven grandchildren twelve great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Burial will be in Letts cemetery after a Sunday service at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction joint obituary notice.

Children Struck By Car While Playing In Chorpening Yard
Two four year old children Janice Chorpening and John Turner were hit by a car on a Dublin farm yard while playing on a swing set. The driver Donald Delsing 44 of Iowa City faced reckless driving charges after losing control while passing another vehicle. Both children suffered minor cuts and bruises and were treated at Washington County Hospital before being released.

Six Cattle Killed by Milwaukee Freight Train
Six head of cattle owned by Paul Kendall were killed early Thursday when struck by a Milwaukee Railroad freight train. Several cattle wandered about a mile from pasture when the accident occurred. Friends helped Kendall round up the carcasses west of the Wellston community, southwest of Washington.

Berlin clash as Communist police fire into American sector
In West Berlin the Communist people's police opened fire in two bursts across the U S sector injuring no one but narrowly missing five U S military policemen. Dawn shots ranged from 250 to 300 rounds as East German refugees crashed a truck into barbed wire. Refugees escaped as fire continued from 5:00 to 5:08 a m with Western and Berlin police responding.
