A column reports drouth cattle slaughter to begin Monday in six packing plants in Sioux City. A large cattle shipment arrives from Kansas City. The Sioux City meat plant is ready to resume operations.
About 500 Pythians from 14 lodges in six counties attended Marengo district convention. Cedar Rapids was chosen as the next convention city. The City Council, despite objections from Mayor W. J. Neill, extended beer parlor closing time from midnight to 1 A M. Fifty parlor proprietors signed to obey the law if others follow.
E. C. Eicher to speak at Muscatine political rally Monday night. Governor Herring and Senator Murphy expected. Rally linked to Muscatine Young Democrats activities after a good will party in West Liberty drew 200 attendees.
Pledges in the Cedar Rapids community chest drive reached $50,307 toward a $65,000 goal on Friday. Workers reported progress as donations continued to come in.
Secretary of War George H Dern will view Lock 16 opposite Muscatine from the river bank Monday while en route from Moline Illinois to St. Louis Missouri. Officials learned Friday. The plane will leave Moline at 3 p m and cruise above the river control project here.
Walter Coppock of Shenandoah achieved a perfect cribbage hand described as a once in a lifetime thrill during a game at the fire station. Opponent George Cunningham faced him while Neal Davis, the chief of police, and witnesses Floyd Bradshaw observed the event.
More than 160 people attended the annual convention of the sixth Iowa district of the Daughters of Union Veterans in Newton. Mrs. Marie Fuller of Mason City was named president, succeeding Mrs. Julia Black of Newton.

Neh Lincoln reports 78 year old John Kirlin celebrated as he becomes father to a seven pound daughter. Kirlin, who already has a 6 year old child with the same name, is married to a 35 year old mother with six other children from a previous marriage.
King Peter II, age eleven, arrived in Belgrade to a warm welcome and the traditional bread and salt. He was escorted by guards and presented to the Serbian Orthodox patriarch, amid public cheers for the new monarch and his mother Queen Marie widow of King Alexander.
Goldfield Town was picked as the site for the United Presbyterian synod during the seventy fifth annual session held in Newton Iowa on October 13. Trustees elected were Pew G. F. Carnahan of St Charles and Hervey Barnes of Crawfordsville. Directors named for Tarkio College were the Rev W F Graham Allerton J F Weltman Winterset and the Rev D Chalmers Fulton Washington.
The W S Reister and Sons poultry house led in farm deliveries and earned a post dinner celebration hosted by the Priebe organization. A party for 31 guests followed at Congress Hotel with Edith Reister and Aiken Reynolds performing before a trip to the State Theater for Will Rogers in Judge Priest.
Deputy game warden T K Johnston announces quail shooting will be allowed next week in five designated districts around Washington county on alternate days starting Monday October 15 and Tuesday 16. Some areas may open midweek, with posted schedules and limited bag limits of 54 to 254 birds across districts.
Southeast petitions to postal department seek a new star mail route from Washington to Mt Pleasant replacing the former Washington Burlington branch service. Secretary Clair Logan of the Washington Chamber of Commerce says petitions circulate next week in Washington and served towns. A morning Mt Pleasant to Washington trip and a late afternoon return are proposed with possible full morning and afternoon round trips to improve mail service. Congressman Ficher supports the effort and after signatures the petitions will be forwarded to officials.
West Second street residents have signed the petition for crushed rock surfacing and the document is filed at city hall. absentee owners’ signatures are pending. trustees of local banks and the school board show support, with plans to surfacing from the county jail corner to North Avenue B and ties to North Avenue E for church access. Father J H O’Donnell has pushed the project and work may begin once signatures align.
Margaret Hales Love, longtime superintendent since 1929, resigns to lead Wichita General Hospital in Wichita Falls Texas. The 140 bed city county hospital has grown under her leadership and sees the move as a tribute to her ability. Washington County congratulates her on the promotion.

James Patterson 71 a longtime railway employee died at his Crawfordsville home after a nine week illness due to a stroke. Born September 10 1863 in Anamosa Iowa he worked for three railways before 1908 and Burlington pensioned last year.Survived by widow Martha Butcher and ten children including Lloyd Jay Mary Frank Raymond Clarence Louis and James with John deceased. one brother Albert and sister Mrs Cynthia Holmes. Funeral at L A Jones funeral home Monday at two in the afternoon conducted by Rev EB Hebner. Burial Woodlawn Cemetery.
The Washington hospital with thirty beds is among fifty Iowa hospitals in 25 towns named on the American College of Surgeons approved list. Dr. Frederick H. Martin notes criteria include medical staff, records, lab and x ray facilities, and monthly clinical reviews to improve care.
Funeral services for Mrs. J Kk Coulter will be held at L A Jones funeral home Tuesday at 2 30 p m. She died Friday in St Louis after hip fracture followed by pneumonia and long hospital stay. Survived by husband J T Coulter two sons Homer and Donald of Peoria Ill, two brothers and a sister of Logansport Ind. Formerly Emma Little of Logansport.
Police and relatives organize a large search near the Stoll home in Louisville for Mrs Berry Stoll who vanished after a brutal kidnapping from a sick bed. Federal investigators fear a Lindbergh parallel as a mysterious plane hovered and telephone lines were cut during a ransom event in central Kentucky.
Lee Durian, son of Mr and Mrs Henry Durian, is appointed assistant at Wellman Savings Bank, announced by Cashier Roy Durian. A 1981 Wellman High School graduate, he completed two years at the State University of Iowa.
The Y M C A reports the pool heater is now working adequately, solving prior cold-water complaints. The unit, installed by W T Carson, draws hot water via steam coils from the heating plant and was funded at the last annual meeting. Water is tested twice weekly at the county hospital lab and maintained with sand filtration alum and chlorine.
