This Iowa town with 1,400 residents known as the popcorn center of the world expects a surge of farm trucks delivering corn to Odebolt elevators. County totals show Sac 6,256 acres yielding 10,556,375 pounds and Ida 3,545 acres producing 6,527,025 pounds, highlighting regional prominence in popcorn production.
Sheriff J. K. Davidson says James H Harris, a barber at the state training school for boys in Eldora, signed a confession admitting he stole a $600 ring and a $300 watch. The items were taken from a car driven by two former inmates, found on school grounds and turned over to officers after a package addressed to County Attorney D. W. Dickinson arrived with the watch and ring inside.
About 250 boosters from Nebraska Illinois and Iowa met in Oskaloosa to discuss extending the road formerly known as No. 2. Don L. Berry of Indianola was reelected president Charles H. Young of Muscatine named vice president and J W Cook of Oskaloosa reappointed secretary.
Des Moines report states Fred Kraschel son of former Gov Nelson Kraschel has left Iowa for Washington DC to join the United States Department of Agriculture in the division of farm securities investigation. He was informed of the position and will perform some legal duties after being admitted to the bar in Iowa.
B. L. Schreck, 30, with no permanent address, was arrested on investigation of fraud linked to making vacuum cleaner repairs. He allegedly called a homeowner's wife stating her unit needed repairs, lent a substitute sweeper, which proved worthless, and kept the original.
Des Moines reports delay after the state executive council balks at resuming private dummy license plates for investigators. The State Commerce Commission seeks 26 sets of plates to enable proper investigations, citing difficulty with official plates. The issue echoes 1938 partisan disputes over dummy plates used by candidates and officials.
Mrs. Mary Deian, 50, of Bettendorf, waiting in the Scott county courthouse for the trial of her son Charles, 19, and cousin John, 19, on breaking and entering charges, died of a heart attack. Prosecutors note family grief and prior troubles, including eviction threats and a youth sent to Eldora training school.
Frederick Clark Tilden 92 longtime Ames resident and Civil War veteran died at his home after 69 years in the city. He served in Company M of the 11th Vermont Infantry and retired from business in 1937. One of two Civil War veterans left in Story County. Captain Charles Hamilton 194 of Ames survived.
Captain Brown announced that Troop F of the 118th Cavalry will get new clothing and equipment after Major Thompson of the regular army condemned many items as unserviceable. The replacement items are expected within one to two weeks as part of a drive to keep National Guard gear ready for emergencies. Drill schedules may rise from 48 to as many as 60 or 1090 yearly, but no orders have been issued yet.
John Stout suffered the loss of four fingers on his right hand in a corn picker mishap at his father Lafe Stout’s farm near West Chester this morning around eight o clock.
Senator Bennett Clark of Missouri charged Assistant Secretary of War Louis Johnson with an idiotic and unpatriotic attempt to inflame the public for war. He cited Johnson’s defense lesson from Poland and warned against equating the United States with Germany’s surround and Poland’s fate.
Pete Christner of the Wayland community died this morning at 10 30 at his home. The body was taken to L A Jones funeral home for plans. Funeral at Eicher church with burial in its cemetery. Born December 9 1865 in Trenton Iowa son of Jacob and Barbara Christner. Married Lydia Conrad June 19 1900 they moved near Wayland. Survived by widow, siblings Lena Hershey Mary Giesser Chris Mena and many others and children Enos Amos Elon A C Verle McKeone Verle and Carl Erickson. Car accident injuries noted with hand mangled in a farm picker.
Captain O. J. Brown marks ten years in command of Troop F, 115th Cavalry, since October 11, 1929. The Washington unit is known as one of Iowa’s best and Brown has focused on a new permanent armory with a large riding hall, expected to be ready by early next year.
County treasurer Marion S. George reports September tax receipts of 221 124 73 and nine month total of 676 314 65 against levy 738 665 29. September distributions to taxing bodies total 274 295 15, including 53 170 42 in homestead refunds from the state tax board. Washington county homestead refunds for the year amount to 109 773 53.
No. 92 highway association gathered yesterday at the Downing hotel in Oskaloosa with about 160 attendees including President Don Berry and Secretary O E Schmitt. Leaders urged federal markings for the road while distributing 500 leaflets noting the 462.4 mile Iowa span and the Chicago to Council Bluffs shortest-route claim on No 34 and 86.
Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress and Bufford Reece appealed a jury award of $5,000 to Mrs. Mary Coakley of Washington after a horse incident at an exposition. She claimed a back injury and hospital stays in Waterloo and Iowa City, seeking $25,000 plus interest. The Blackhawk county jury awarded $5,000 with interest from May 15, 1939, upheld by Judge A. B. Lovejoy who overruled a new trial motion.
The United Automobile Workers CIO warned of a strike against Chrysler, which employs about 55,000 workers in 13 plants. The union filed with the state labor mediation board a request for a five day notice of Intention to strike on behalf of Chrysler employees amid a worsening production schedule dispute.
London dispatch reports 158000 British troops moved across the channel in five weeks as a unified Allied command forms under General Gamelin. Britain strengthens defenses in France and the Middle East with tanks over 15 tons and increased materiel. Chamberlain signals readiness to reject Hitler peace terms but keep door open for a later German offer.
Rollin B Organ dies in Chicago at age 95. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2:30 PM in the Presbyterian church with a brief church service by Dr F W Eastwood. A Masonic graveside service by Washington Lodge follows at Woodlawn cemetery.
The Hotel Grand on North Marion Avenue, formerly the Annex, is receiving a new red coat with white trim to replace its dull yellow shade, giving it a striking refreshed appearance.
Mrs. James Clark aged about 74, a native of the Clay community, died yesterday in a hospital at Oskaloosa after a week there. Her home had long been Packwood and her husband died about a year ago. Funeral plans await word from four children in Arizona, with two more in the Packwood area. She was a daughter of Benjamin and Jane Meacham. sisters Dot and Frances Meacham live in Clay.
The Smouse estate owners hire Howard Kerr and team to repaint the outer facade of the structure. Inside, Ray Box, new hotel proprietor since last summer, completes a full lobby redesign and other painting. Inner spring mattresses were added to several rooms lacking them, and Box notes growing patronage from travelers.
G B Price of Leon and governor of Rotary International district 182 will visit Washington on Monday October 16 for talks with the local Rotary club at the YMCA. The Washington club, organized in 1929, meets weekly and includes President Harry Rameseyer and Secretary Ralph W Thompson among 85 members, as part of Rotary’s global network of about 5900 clubs and 210000 Rotarians in 80 countries.
