UPI reports the US Army Corps of Engineers backs a 6.96 million flood control project on the lower Big Sioux River from Akron Iowa to Sioux City South Dakota. The plan shortens the channel by 20 miles with cutoffs, deepens and cleans the rest, and builds levees only at the upper end to direct flood flows. Public hearing set for November 9 in Sioux City.

Corn Picking Underway In Iowa As Harvest Nears
Iowa corn packing was set to begin in earnest as the state reports favorable weather aiding drying and curing. Soybean combining reached about a quarter, ahead of last year but below the ten year average, with progress strongest in north central counties and weakest in south central. Grain sorghum harvest nears average completion and winter wheat sowing runs above normal at about 80 percent.

Four Killed In Bridgeport Pipeline Explosion
In Bridgeport Illinois a gas vapor above a leaking oil pipeline exploded on Monday night. Mayor James W. Neely and three Marathon Pipeline Co employees Muril Magee Lee Askren and Walter Burton were killed. Three others were injured as flames threatened the Ohio Oil Co tank farm. Authorities searched for Neely and Magee identification.

Mike Robertson Dies In Denver Colorado
Funeral services for Lloyd M. Mike Robertson 61 were held October 3 in Denver with burial at Ft Logan National Cemetery. He died September 29 1961 after a career including 17 years as an ROTC instructor at the University of Missouri and service in WWII. He married Thelma M. Donoho on February 1 1930 and later worked as a guard at the U S Mint. Survivors include his wife a son a brother a sister Mrs Haz Wikoff of Brighton and three grandchildren.

President Kennedy flew 3100 miles to Dallas to visit Speaker Sam Rayburn who remains gravely ill with cancer. Doctors say the visit did him a world of good and note Rayburn’s courage as cortisone and experimental fluorouracil aim to extend his life. Threat of UAW Strike at International Harvester
