Capt J A Young recalled a welcoming past as General Gordon spoke of national unity and shared hardships of both sides. The oration honored soldiers and women of the north and south while highlighting reconciliation and brotherhood across the divide.

John Seerbe eighteen was buried in a sixteen foot well in Belle Plaine Louisiana after removing brick curbing the sides caved in about five feet of earth fell on him. He was found standing upright and dead about an hour and a half later.
