An American Nike-Hercules missile battalion of 703 men landed at Keelung to bolster Formosa defenses. The unit moves echoed Red demands for withdrawal as casualties from a six week bombardment climbed with estimates of civilian and military deaths and injuries.
Sixty four couples have entered the year's bridge marathon sponsored by Washington's Men's Club. They will begin within two weeks with 13 matches per couple and a two week break between each month’s period starting the week of October 13. The list includes Mr and Mrs Fred Anderson, Mr and Mrs Robert Arthur, Mr and Mrs Al Baldrige, and many others.
Farmers in Washington County through the Soil Conservation District report extensive summer and early fall work. Concrete gully control structures and dams are being installed near Riverside and Washington, with gullies shaped and seeded for grass waterways, and tile extended through the dams. Stock water ponds and larger ponds with pipe drop inlets are completed or under construction, with technical assistance and surveying provided by SCS and district staff.
Mrs. Merrit C Barton 80 died Tuesday after a brief illness. Born April 25 1878 in Douds she married Merrit C Barton October 24 1910. They ran a Winfield funeral home for nearly 50 years. Survivors include her husband a son and two sisters. Funeral set for Sunday October 12 at 2 pm at Winfield Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Phil Weldin was elected first district president at the Women’s Republican Council of Iowa meeting in Davenport. Rep. Fred Schwengerl spoke in the afternoon and state president Mrs. Marie Wilson addressed in the morning. Washington attendees included Miss Mae Davis and Mrs. A. W. Hinderman among others. Davis gave a county report and Williams Sitler welcomed. Washington received the traveling prize for most members present from a distance.
Iowa Liquor Control Commission reports a net income of 9,236,474 for the year ending June 30, 1958, from total sales of 38,869,236. Despite a 15 percent staff cut at 179 stores, payroll dropped to 2,351,664 while sales rose 1,288,290 thanks to higher farm income more brands and stronger border-area sales.
Dale Fuhr and Joe Cochran observe their 12th anniversary as operators of a Washington food store. They bought the Piggly Wiggly on North Iowa Ave in 1946 and moved to the current U S A ve location in 1956 under the U-Save emblem.
Mary W. Prymek 83 a Riverside area resident since infancy died at 4 45 am today October 8 1958 at The Pines after a 10 month stay. Funeral at Riverside Methodist Church Friday 2 pm with Rev. Dendy Garrett officiating. Burial Riverside Cemetery. Survivors include son Lewis Iowa City sisters Mrs Charles Soukup Washington and Mrs Frances Morgan Letts one brother Albert Weber Riverside eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
About 100 students from Mid Prairie schools enjoyed a oneday trip aboard the C B and Q train from Washington to Crawfordsville. West Chester pupils rode Friday while Wellman Kalona and rural district students joined today as part of a transportation unit.
The Ohio Supreme Court set the date for Cleo Eugene Peters 20 of Muscatine Iowa to be executed in the electric chair at Ohio Penitentiary on November 7 for the holdup murder of Amish farmer Paul Coblentz 25 near Millersburg. Peters conviction followed his role as the triggerman in last summer’s shooting. companion Michael V. Dumoulin 21 Wooster received life. The court rejected Peters appeal noting no debatable constitutional issue in the trial.
All men aged 60 and over in this area are invited to meet at the Washington YMCA on Friday Oct 10 at 2 pm. The Senior Citizens group offers devotions lunch and games including shuffleboard checkers chess and archery. Old members are urged to bring friends.
The grand opening of Marshall’s Furniture is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday in a new one story brick building at 221 South Iowa Avenue. Proprietor Ralph Marshall, in business since 1954, is joined by Don Kiesey Skip Renoux and Fred Bartow.
Pope Pius XII, 82, faced probable death as doctors reported a second cerebral attack and grave cardio pulmonary collapse at Castel Gandolfo. Vatican Radio relayed medical bulletins detailing rising fever, high blood pressure, rapid pulse, and worsening condition as prayers rose for the church’s leader.
John Walker and Dean Stanley led Y's Men members on a tour of the Northrup King seed corn plant. They explained processing steps and the club agreed to fund part of the city Halloween party and to cancel its May 12 meeting for the YMCA gathering.
Alabama Governor James E. Folsom said Truman has a mighty good chance to win the Democratic nomination and that many Alabamans support him. Truman has repeatedly said he will not seek the nomination. Folsom also cited Alabama as free of integration problems and predicted Republicans will be beaten in November.
Iowa Governor Herschel Loveless defended plans to lead the reception line for President Eisenhower at the National Corn Picking Contest on October 17 but tied it to protocol. Republicans charged he would face opposition if election candidates appeared alongside him. Milroy cited figures Hoffa, Baker, and Farrell, with Hoffa’s name tied to a 1956 Loveless campaign check. Loveless denied knowledge of Teamster money in the campaign.
Under threatening skies the Milwaukee Braves lead the New York Yankees 2 to 1 after three innings in game six of the World Series. Warren Spahn starts for Milwaukee against Whitey Ford as both clubs seek a deciding seventh game.
Members of the Leon Beatty American Legion post met to finalize remodeling of the Legion rooms in city hall and to discuss an open house and pancake supper set for November 18. It was announced that 140 members have paid their dues for the coming year.
The Washington Golf & Country Club postpones its annual stockholders dinner and meeting from October 9 to October 16 due to adverse weather delaying road surfacing. Those with reservations retain them. others may attend by October 14.
Washington reports the new Republican push begins with Vice President Richard Nixon leading a three day swing through Pennsylvania Ohio and West Virginia to rally support and promote a hard line against socialism as Democrats debate responses to the GOP attack.
A senior lifesaving course will be offered at the YMCA beginning Thursday Oct. 16 at 8 30 p m. Enrollees should contact the YMCA soon to reserve a spot. The class will be limited in size. Don Kiesey and Mrs. Max Owen will teach.

Five day outlook shows temperatures near normal through Monday, then a drop below normal Friday night into Saturday. Normal highs 64 to 68, lows 40 to 44. Precipitation 0.30 to 0.50 inches via intermittent showers through Saturday, tapering off by weekend.
