Dr. Ruth Church reviews four year progress of the county health unit noting immunization gains for smallpox diphtheria and partial success against whooping cough. She cites venereal disease control tuberculosis maternity home visits and rising child health work while signaling her departure for a new position.
Zara Abbie Boyer widow of Walter Boyer died Sunday at St Anthony s hospital Moline after nine weeks illness. Funeral set for Tuesday 2 pm at L A Jones funeral home with Rev H W Munster officiating. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving daughter Mrs Lyle Smith Rock Island sister Mrs Ed Wasmuth Kansas City and half brother James English Kremlin OK. Son Earl Boyer preceded in death.
Milo M. Zeck files for divorce from wife Mary Ellen Zeck citing their Miami Florida marriage on July 8 1845 while he served in the navy. The petition is entered with the district court clerk and details remain to be developed.
Volunteers of America held a tag day to aid destitute mothers with children in care. Mrs. R M Whitehead reported Jane Whitehead won first prize with 35 dollars 41 cents, Lorene Fritz second with 28 84, Betty Ibendahl third with 23 67, Betty Kunik 20 95, Harriet Kunik 17 10, and Dean York 17 02.
The local United States employment service records show that in September 50 people were placed in jobs, mainly in food processing plants. There were 13 new unemployment compensation claims 9 of which were against Iowa and 4 against California Michigan New York and Washington. Eleven new SRA claims were filed by veterans under the GI bill. Total continued claims 95 and 280 office receptions. Many came for information or were not registered or were not applicants. British diplomatic sources predict the United States and Britain will soon announce willingness to recognize the Soviet-sponsored provisional government of Austria. The move may ease tensions from the breakdown of the Big Five foreign ministers council in London.
The plaintiff seeks a divorce and restoration of her maiden name Mary Ellen Asken. She has refused to live with him as his wife while receiving an allotment and using it. The plaintiff asks that the defendant no longer use his name and that she reclaim her maiden name. Attorney L. J. Kehoe represents the plaintiff.
Longshoremen in New York Harbor refused to resume work defying union leaders. Oil and automobile workers were set to return, but about 60,000 stevedores and affiliates stayed out at the height of the week long walkout. A pier notice stated no gangs would go back until all workers return except those on troop and Red Cross ships.
In Buenos Aires 142 women students aged 18 to 25 were detained for university demonstrations against the military government. They were held at San Miguel asylum as reports circulated of a clash with authorities and possible pensioning of supreme court members.
Ames report notes John Mathers son of K A Mathers Haskins a freshman in the agriculture division plays the bass horn. He is a member of Iowa State College marching band a 130 piece unit returning to peacetime strength and will perform at all home football games this season.
The treason trial of Pierre Laval opened again without the defendant, his defense team, or defense witnesses. Judge Mongibeaux pressed on toward conviction as Gen. Paul Doyen testified about Laval’s actions and the armistice period, noting Laval’s refusal to attend court.
Fire Prevention Week begins today as the fire department and insurance groups urge broad public participation. Citizens should inspect premises and eliminate fire hazards. Leading causes include smoking and matches, sparks on roofs, rubbish, lightning, electrical faults, defective chimneys and heating, and inflammable liquids.
The national war fund campaign reports Saturday donations of 1624 bringing the total to 2916.60, about a quarter of county quota. Clarence Fulton led Crawford township with 581.60, the first township to finish. KK A Mathers Haskins district sent 108 on 80 quota, Robert Wiley 98 on 69 quota, Vernon Fry 55. Shell Oil district manager R T Seidel sent 10 as the company contributes 115000 to the fund nationally.
A former officer in the armistice commission recalls Germany's aim to dismantle France. He says any Frenchman aiding a policeman or collaborator was a traitor, labeling Laval as such and emphasizing continued resistance.
Funeral services for Edward Turnipseed 84 of Sigourney were held at Pilotburg church with burial in Pilotburg cemetery. Born September 30 1861 at Pilotburg he lived mainly in Washington county. Survived by his wife Eva Work later Mary Jeane McGinnis two marriages nine children and several grandchildren. one son Jesse Turnipseed who died as a prisoner of war.

Lewis 76 widow of St Clair Lewis will be held Tuesday at four o clock at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev T E White of the Presbyterian church and the Order of Eastern Star Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery She died Sunday morning in Davis nursing home Des Moines born January 27 1869 in Ackla s in 1892 they moved to Washington where Mr Lewis headed the water plant for 33 years Survivors include sister in law Mrs H E Runyon and three nieces in Washington and Des Moines Des Moines relatives listed in obituary
Mildred Stewart sustained a fractured leg Saturday afternoon after a car struck her bicycle in the 1100 block of East Washington Street. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Cloyce Stewart of 1203 East Washington.
A large turnout is expected Tuesday evening at the Y to discuss securing an artificial lake nearby. Men from county towns Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant will attend, with representatives from all areas urged to be present. A state conservation commission official may attend to provide project details and funding sources. Steps will be taken to form a district organization to work with the commission.
Mrs Emilie Simmering 52 died at 11 15 this morning at 608 East Jefferson after a nine month illness. The body goes to L A Jones funeral home for arrangements. Born in Czechoslovakia December 23 1892 she came to the United States at 19 and to Washington county 28 years ago. She married John McKinstry in 1917 later to Andrew Hauter and in 1940 to John Simmering. Surviving are her husband and many children including Fred Minden John O McKinstry Elliott McKinstry Julia Hauter Washington Andrew Hauter Washington John and Ed Simmering two Stanley and Tena McKeown San Francisco Joe Simmering in the armed forces plus four brothers and two sisters.
Patricia Nicola and Mildred Stewart were cycling when a car from the east struck Mildred, with Patricia uninjured. The driver, a discharged veteran, stayed to learn Mildred’s injuries. Mildred has non severe fractures and bruises. the Stewarts took her to the hospital.
U S officials said hoards of loot from Japan's conquests may be stored in government buildings and the navy ministry was surrounded by armed guards. Gen Douglas MacArthur's command reportedly uncovered records of seized treasure in Japan's financial institutions and more guards may be placed at other buildings. Premier designate Baron Shidehara formed a liberal cabinet, taking office tomorrow with a lineup seen as older and more liberal than the prior administration.
The YWCA announces winter activities starting tomorrow with a 4 pm gym class for younger girls and a 7:30 pm class for older girls at the Y gym. Classes run Tuesdays and Fridays, with Marjorie Euwer in charge of the 4 pm session and Bernice Johnson overseeing the 7:30 pm group. Nonmember girls can obtain tickets from Mrs. M. M. Hebner at the YW.
Josef Kramer commander of Belsen camp testifies in his own defense before a British military court charged with Nazi atrocity crimes. Defense counsel Major S Winwood argues Kramer is simply a German and references Nazi laws linking to the Oswiecim camp.
