Chicago buyers paid a top hog price of 5.55 dollars as cooler weather spurred demand. Of 25 000 receipts, 12 000 went to packers, tightening open market supplies and lifting prices to the highest level since July 1932. Des Moines reports a top price of 5.05 dollars, reached for the third time this year.
Public Works Administrator Ickes telegraphs governors nationwide urging speedy use of the 4000000 public works highway allotment to accelerate construction and employment.
Des Moines reports Secretary Ickes sent a sharp telegram accusing Iowa of delaying public works approvals. Governor Herring countered that red tape in Washington prevents progress. Iowa Highway Commission plans to let contracts totaling 1,106,004 dollars on federal road projects this week, with the remaining state share awaiting approval before year end.
Washington Presbyterian young people led by Dr. F. W. Eastwood and colleagues attended the district Christian Endeavor convention at Sigourney for the second year in a row. About 80 people registered. Earnest Simpson elected president and Eva Diller secretary of the new 15th district including Washington Johnson Keokuk and Iowa counties.
Mrs Mary K Fisher aged 81 died yesterday afternoon at 4 45 at her home 52 West Monroe street from complications after a fall and fracture near the hip. Funeral to be held Tuesday at 3 PM at Shermans Junction home conducted by Rev A M Malcolm with private burial at Woodlawn cemetery. She was born July 16 1852 near Columbus City Iowa and married Rev George F Fisher in 1877. Survived by two children Elizabeth at home at time of death.

The Wonderly farm home of the Ralph Orr family, about 30 miles northwest of Crawfordsville, burned Saturday night while the family was away. Neighbors found the blaze. most contents were lost and no insurance covered the house. The Ords stayed with neighbors temporarily.

The Washington Municipal Band will lead a parade and provide music for the display opening. Stores plan special announcements in Wednesday's Journal detailing anticipated fall offerings and events.
Oklahoma City oct 9 George Machine Guna Kelly and his wife Katherine go on trial for conspiring in the kidnapping of oilman Charlies Urecher. Federal agents warned they would be shot after Kelly fought a federal agent in the building and was beaten with a pistol.
Dr. F. B. Knight and Harry K. Newburn will address county high school teachers at Washington high school auditorium Thursday evening. The Wellman band opens the program at 7. Knight speaks on Is There a Future for the Teacher. Newburn discusses Of What Value Is the Teacher in Directing Pupils Learning. The event is planned by county superintendents with separate meetings for rural and secondary teachers.
The Washington Gif and Country Club will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday evening October 16 at eight o'clock in the club house. Members are urged to attend for important business.
Samuel Conn pleaded guilty to liquor law violations and was granted a postponement of sentence until he completes harvesting crops at his Middlecreek Township farm. He must appear for sentencing after the harvest.

Grocers and druggists echo weak demand and high prices, blaming law limits and bootleg competition. several veterans note pre prohibition profits lay in liquor and free lunches.
Washington and Muscatine clashed in a 15 inning epic won by the American Pearls 8 to 2. Stan Kiesey fanned 25 as Dale Kiesey drove in the decisive run with a three bagger and Walt Kiesey’s long sac fly. Ted Kiesey starred in center while Haller matched Stan on the mound in a pitchers duel.

John H. Holsworth of Harper five years old was killed when a car crashed into the foundation of a railway crossing signal at North Iowa avenue near the Milwaukee station. Francis Wittetowe of Harper and Wilfrng Striegel of Sigourney were injured and hospitalized in Washington county. Striegel suffered a severe burn and multiple bruises.
Violent deaths occurred in seven Iowa communities over the weekend, snuffing out nine lives and seriously injuring eleven others. Most fatalities resulted from highway accidents.
