McGovern Draws 5000 at Des Moines Dinner Rally

Bentonsport fall tour to view historic sites in 1880s town

Washington County Historical Society plans a fall tour Sunday October 15 to Bentonsport Iowa known as the Williamsburg of the Midwest. Stops include Mason House Post Office Green Store Greef Bank Presbyterian and Methodist Churches Transport Academy and Vernon School with an 1851 1868 era trail. Tour begins 2 p.m. at Mason House with 85 cent admission.

At least five people die in Virginia from flooding after heavy rains from an autumn storm. Close Call Delays Coastal Rail Disaster Averted

Iowa Vehicle Inspection Law Tightens Car Trade Rules

Washington County Attorney warns buyers and sellers that all traded or gifted motor vehicles must carry a valid official certificate of inspection under the Iowa code. Fines up to 100 dollars and liability for costs apply to violators, with possible penalties for drivers and owners in accidents if directed inspections are not followed. The act also imposes tire safety regulations with potential fines and jail time for unsafe tires and lists conditions that mark tires unsafe such as exposed ply, bulges, very shallow tread, and racing slicks.

Crane Co. expands plant to add Monarch valve line and 60 percent growth

Crane Co plans a major expansion at its plant on 12th Ave to handle long term contracts and a new Monarch butterfly valve line. The project adds 20,000 sq ft of building space, raises permanent staff to 300, and adds a second shift with 3:30 pm to midnight hours. Starting pay ranges from $2.83 to $3.79, with benefits and training options through Kirkwood Community College, plus a program paying learners $1.60 hourly after 50 days of successful work.

Military draws many recruits in September

Washington reports a record 50,000 recruits signed into the armed services in September. Defense Manpower Chief Roger T Kelley said four of every five were true volunteers, noting this follows 47,000 enlistments in July and 48,500 in August. He spoke at a Pentagon meeting of civic and business leaders.
