World Series opens with Cardinals win 9-5

In the first game of the 1964 World Series the Cardinals outslugged the Yankees 9-5. Mike Shannon homered with Ken Boyer aboard in the sixth to help Cardinals rally from a 4-4 tie, while Babe Ruth era play-by-play notes detail early scoring and defensive plays for both teams.

Goldwater Attacks Johnson on Social Security in Atlantic City

Senator Barry Goldwater charged President Johnson is the real enemy of Social Security at a breakfast rally in Atlantic City. He accused Johnson of seeking more executive power and urged returning authority to Congress and the states. Johnson campaigns across Midwest urging farm aid and responsibility

President Johnson toured the Middle West urging Corn Belt voters to keep progress rolling and defend farm programs. In Des Moines he framed the race as responsibility versus irresponsibility and attacked Republican farm policy as disaster prone. He argued for parity of opportunity for rural America and pledged a responsible, deterrable campaign. He cited a 6 billion dollar potential income drop from ending price supports and outlined three Democratic farm measures to boost income and rural opportunity.

Hughes Supports NFO At Iowa State Convention

At the Iowa NFO state convention Governor Hughes praised the National Farmers Organization for pushing higher farm prices and cost of production. Delegates endorsed continued nonviolent efforts and the fight for collective bargaining, while state resolutions proposed higher income taxes to boost school aid. Oren Staley urged farmers to choose the NFO road to protect family farms, with elections for state officers set for January and a national convention planned in Minneapolis in December.

County Plans Comprehensive Study of Washington County Development

The Washington County Board of Supervisors and Planning and Zoning Commission announced a joint effort to study future county development. Powers and Associates will lead the $14,616 project with support from the County Engineer's office, creating base maps, land use plans, a master road system, and park and recreation plans for unincorporated areas.
