Ottumwa Iowa Oct 7 Special a woman was burned to death during a rubbish fire at Blakesburg as a large barbecue drew five thousand people to hear Bryan speak. He planned to address Sivourney that night.
Creston Iowa October 7 Mrs Elizabeth Bartholomew aged 83 was fatally burned today when her clothing caught fire as she burned rubbish in the yard. The body was incinerated.
Circuit Judge Clement Smith petitioned the Michigan Supreme Court to disbar Charles R. Mains of Battle Creek over contempt charges. Mains accuses Smith of corruption and conspiracy to tilt a trial. Testimony in open court on Oct 7, with Mains to present proof and Smith to respond.
Fond du Lac Wisconsin October 7 state deputy fish and game warden M F Carpenter and other wardens in the Lake Winnebago country urge the state to supply a power boat to chase poachers. State Game Warden Ellar son is weighing a request for the department to buy a steam or gasoline launch for use on the lake.
Sioux City reports County Lyon seeks to repudiate 120000 in bonds for exceeding indebtedness. Judge Shiras allows 86009 of the amount and awards judgment for the remainder. The Massachusetts Republican state convention nominated Governor W. Murray Crane for governor, John L. Bates for lieutenant governor, William M. Olin for secretary of state, Hosea M. Knowlton for attorney general, John W. Swimball for auditor, and Edward S. Bradford for treasurer. The platform endorses the gold standard, calls for bonds payable in coin, praises McKinley, opposes trusts, and honors soldiers and Admiral Dewey.
The Tabernacle in Peoria hosts a corn filled opening ball as the corn exposition begins a week long run. Citizens eagerly embrace corn themed decorations and the first official exhibits start Monday with a corn decorated parade led by Lieutenant Governor Northcott and an illuminated bicycle parade.
Springfield October 7 Captain W N Kubanks secretary of the state board of equalization issued a tabulated statement comparing county assessments for 1899 under the new revenue law with those for 1898 under the old law. Eight counties have not sent in reports and excluding them the net increase is 5009351 dollars. Cook county is expected to show a rise of 200000000 dollars.
The Sanga county grand jury charges Mayor Loren E. Wheeler Chief of Police Hugh S. Castles and saloonkeeper John Mockler with conspiring to permit protect and promote gaming houses in Springfield. Wheeler is accused of corruptly refusing to suppress the gambling dens.
A pair of North Atlantic cormorants strayed inland near Chariton and fought off rescuers with strong bills. One bird was released, the other kept as a curiosity. In Terre Haute a divorce decree from R Dudley Diggs to Mrs Jennie Diggs was filed and entered later the same day.

His wife does not know his whereabouts and a search by County Commissioner George W. Crider seeks him for $800 on his bench for appearance. Clark allegedly tried to bribe the prosecuting attorney to drop the grand jury probe into county officers and commissioners.
In Galesburg Illinois on October 7 photographer A Loveland lighting a flash powder explosion severely injures him as the Lamkin residence is damaged by fire and blast. Mrs Lamkin and Mr Lamkin suffer cuts and bruises while parts of Loveland’s hand are blown away but some saved. In Springfield Governor Tanner grants a temporary stay of execution for August A Becker in a Chicago case before the supreme court. Kid Lavigne is knocked out by McFadden in New York in the nineteenth round.
Manila report says General Fred Grant with infantry and scouts cleared the west bank of the Imus river, three Americans wounded, about ten Filipinos killed, and insurgents routed near Bineayan church. Riley’s Battery supported a sortie south of Bacoor as US forces hold the river. Navy to reinforce Philippines with Brooklyn and other vessels planned for dispatch to crush the rebellion and close rebel supply ports.
A cable from General Otis reports the Siam lost most of its live horses and mules in a typhoon near northern Luzon. Only sixteen mules remained. horses and other animals died or were killed as the vessel pitched and hatch air was restricted. No passengers were harmed. Additional notes describe the ship's voyage from Honolulu through storm seas.
