Death of ex Senator James Harlan in Mount Pleasant
James Harlan former United States senator and Lincoln cabinet member died at his Mount Pleasant home at 9 35 yesterday morning. Congestion of the lungs and liver trouble, worsened by overwork at the Iowa Methodist conference, caused his end. His daughter, married to Chicago's Robert T Lincoln, was at the bedside. Funeral planned for Town Wesleyan University chapel. Born Clarke county Illinois August 25 1820, Harlan served Iowa in Congress 1855 65 and 1866 73, was interior secretary in Lincoln's second cabinet, later chief justice Alabama claims court, and active in state politics and Methodist affairs. His wife died in 1884.
