The Fort Des Moines Army post in Des Moines will shed about 340 acres deemed excess and turn it over to the GSA for gift or sale within about two months. The move preserves roughly 300 acres in the northeastern sector and preserves core facilities while noting opposition from Col Harry Easton Jr. The excess land includes a 40 acre parade ground and a 517 acre golf course amid 47 buildings, of which 14 are usable. The GSA disposal could prioritize Des Moines area stakeholders, with the Des Moines school board recently seeking 65 to 70 acres for a new junior high nearby.

Iowa liquor commissioner C J Burris conducted a spot check of Scott County taverns and found liquor with Illinois tax stamps in at least two venues. Operators dumped the liquor under Burris supervision, with no arrests since Iowa law enforcement isn’t handled by the Liquor Control Commission. Burris plans to report findings to the commission amid concerns over a $16,000 sales drop at two state stores and a broader sales decline.

Dallas based report says House Speaker Sam Rayburn aged 79 is dying of cancer. Surgeons removed a lymph gland at Baylor Medical Center and found malignancy. Doctors state there is no cure and no further surgery is anticipated as Rayburn remains heavily sedated and at risk for escalating pain.
