REA conference to outline hot school lunches for 4500 rural schools in Illinois Iowa and Wisconsin. Delegates will cover adult nutrition classes fruit grain and vegetable preservation and financing for food prep equipment through local REA loan programs.
Prof. Martin Mortensen of Iowa State College told about 150 Danes at a Grand View rally that Denmark must import one third of its stock feed due to wartime disruption. He said herd numbers and poultry have fallen about 50 percent, hay crops were small after severe drought and August rains, and coal prices have risen about fivefold.
University of Iowa engineering student Letcher Eugene Lynn twenty five of Stuart is hospitalized after an unsuccessful suicide attempt. He was found unconscious in a pool of blood at Oakland Cemetery by an unidentified man at 4 30 p m Police say the sides of his throat and both wrists were slashed with a razor blade.
Clarinda Henry Seley 36, gasoline transport driver from Clarinda, died when his truck left the highway near Shambaugh while returning home with gasoline from Kansas City. He was thrown from the cab and pinned beneath the overturned trailer. the cab remained upright. He left a wife and four children.

Survivors of the 1918 Otranto Kashmir collision that sent Iowa and Georgia artillerymen to Europe met in Clinton and chose Davenport as the 1942 reunion host city. Dr. Anthony Sibold of Davenport was elected president with Ray Grimm of Muscatine as vice president, Alex Tilford of Galesburg Illinois as secretary, Bob Bedford of Davenport as treasurer, and Bill Berger of Davenport as chaplain.

Travelers from Maragogsy near Pernambuco witnessed a night battle between two unidentified warships offshore Brazil. One vessel reportedly sank while the other fled behind a smoke screen after about 30 minutes, with cannonades shaking nearby houses. American ships were said to pursue an axis submarine in the same area after a tanker torpedoing.
Don Burger son of Mr and Mrs Fred Burger leaves this evening for Burbank California where he has been accepted for work with the Lockheed Aircraft Company. He was among seventeen of 250 who passed a local test for the position and is a Washington high school graduate last spring.

Mrs. Loren Latta age about 76 died yesterday morning at her home in Spokane Washington after years of poor health since a paralytic stroke. She lived in the east part of Washington in youth and later. Surviving are husband two daughters Mrs Mildred Hunt of Pullman and Mrs C O Lorene Hyde of Tacoma and two grandsons. Funeral services will be in Spokane tomorrow.
A hurricane struck near Miami at dawn impacting 250000 residents with minor damage to lighting, communications and homes. No deaths reported as the center crossed the coast between Miami and Homestead at 5 45 am. The storm came from the Bahamas moving toward Florida with winds near 100 mph. The United Presbyterian church celebrated its centennial this month with afternoon floral greetings and a prominent display. Rev. Milan Thompson, a son of the church now serving near Chicago while in seminary, delivered the anniversary sermon on Faith of Our Fathers and closed with a vocal solo during Sunday morning service.

Two accidents on county highways reported near Kalona and Wayland. Olen Bishop and Martha Ashby of Wellman sustained minor injuries after a side-swiping crash four miles south of Kalona on road No. 1 with about $100 in damages. Edmund Taglauer of Ger menville collided with Luther Crom while Crom attempted a driveway turn. both cars suffered about $40 in damage and no injuries reported.

United Press reports Hitler is committing major force in Russia in a two way offensive aimed at Moscow. London says the attack began last Wednesday and makes progress amid Red Army resistance. Berlin silent but hints indicate Moscow as the objective with German troops advancing from the Veldi hills and Roslavl region. Executions Reported in Czechoslovakia Hundreds are arrested and 13 executed as German police post threats at Prague. Heydrich, heading Czech police, is cited as enforcer of the regime.
The Washington county Employment Service reports ongoing tests for trainees at Lockheed Vega Aircraft in California. In September 50 placements occurred—41 men, 9 women. 38 regular, 12 temporary. There were 46 new applications and 21 renewals. 5 male placements in defense work at Burlington. Mrs. Rose Reid chairman announces preparations for the Washington county Red Cross membership drive. County chair Roger Sherman expects a large registration this year to fund expanded relief work for soldiers and aid to Great Britain. The roll call begins Armistice Day November 11 and ends Thanksgiving Day.
