Marshalltown police seized 26 bicycles illegally parked before local theaters. Waterloo city health officials approved diphtheria immunization for WPA workers families on county relief at a Waterloo Medical Society conference. Thirty five diphtheria cases now under observation.
A 62 year old Waterloo man fractured both ankles after falling 20 feet from a ladder while cleaning an interior wall at a Waterloo store. He was treated for injuries and reported in stable condition.
Mrs Ida Redinger of Des Moines was granted a divorce from Frank M Redinger a former Methodist pastor on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment and drunkenness. They married in 1931 and lived together until January 1938.
The State University of Iowa announces a fledgling naval unit in Iowa City. Five barges and one captain’s gig will compose the inaugural fleet under Col. George F. N. Dailey, commander of the ROTC department, with sponsorship from the Iowa City branch of the United States Army. Ships are being prepared for Saturday morning maneuvers.
Ardith Pueschell five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs William Pueschell of Rudd suffered a broken right shoulder after a fall from a swing. This marks the third time she has broken the same shoulder in the same place.
CLEKALOOSA The city council has two petitions before it on power and light service. Iowa Power and Light Co petitions for a 25 year franchise election while Mayor George Burdock offers a petition to authorize construction of a municipal gas and electric plant.
J Carson Duncan 70 died at Washington county hospital after a collision when his car was struck by a westbound Milwaukee passenger train at Conesville. Funeral at United Presbyterian church Columbus City with burial in Columbus City cemetery. He was a Louisa County supervisor for two decades and survived by his wife two daughters five sons and several relatives.
Wayne Norman announces township selections for the 1939 federal farm benefit program in Washington county. Meetings set in Cedar Lime Creek Oregon Highland Washington and Town townships with additional reports pending from Clay Dutch Creek and Franklin.
Kk F Eastridge of Batavia Iowa won the sweepstakes prize in the Dutch Creek corn show receiving a $100 bill from General Chairman Carl W Klein for his 100 ears of corn valued at a dollar per ear. Judge M A Hauser of Ames selected the sweepstakes winner amid 9 100 ears entries.
Prof M A Hauser of Iowa State College lauds the Dutch Creek corn show as the finest local display he has seen in 33 years of judging. He notes large, high quality entries, with a sample of 100 ears weighing 125 pounds and kernels that separate easily, predicting a strong Iowa corn crop this year.
Former Senator L. J. Dickinson accuses Gillette of supporting court packing and three-justice control of constitutional rulings. He cites bills from 1936 and 1937, contrasts with Roosevelt, and urges Iowans to vote against Gillette as Roosevelt’s choice.
In London the House of Commons backed Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain by 366 to 144 in support of his government’s peace policies. Chamberlain defended actions in Munich and said they averted war and saved Czechoslovakia from annihilation. Berlin predicted a German Czech alliance shaping postwar border maps as a swift unanticipated move.
Cletus Ruxlow, manager of the Sea Food delicatessen on East Washington street, was badly burned this morning when he leaned to relight a low flame in a steamer. Gas had accumulated and James shot out. Ruxlow suffered facial burns and hair loss and was taken to Washington County Hospital for several days.
James Godwin, an escaped killer famed for seducing a jailer's daughter to aid his jailbreak at Lexington, was shot and captured near Hickory after surrendering in a barn two and a half miles from town. He is charged with murder. The jailer's daughter began a three month term in jail and her father resigned.
The Czech delegates yielded at the Reich's urging and secured several key concessions, collaborating to fulfill the demands amid intense pressure.
The jury in the state of Iowa vs James Gardner of Wellman found him guilty on a minor assault and battery count after nearly nine hours deliberation. The case stemmed from a neighbor dispute over cattle damaging a corn field, with defense arguing the injury to J. B. White was accidental. A second jury later heard Howard L. Winder v. D PD Stephens and Dewey Stephens Jr. for $694.50 in damages from a February 1937 auto collision near Ainsworth.
Wrigley Field Chicago Oct 6 Dizzy Dean pitched six innings allowing three hits and kept the Yankees at bay as the Cubs led 3 2 into the bottom of the sixth. Chicago scored in the first on Hack and Demaree and in the third on Martys double driving in Hack and Herman.
Nick Schmitt died yesterday at his home after a stroke at 2 30 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 PM at the Schmitt home southwest of Washington, with burial in Keota. He was born December 22, 1875 in Keokuk county, married Katherine Klett in 1896, and leaves two children Everett and Mrs Frank Mayer, plus nine grandchildren and siblings John Jake Schmitt Rey Michael Schmitt and Mrs Bueh.
The case settled last night before testimony began this morning and jurors were discharged for the term. All petit jurors for September were excused as no further jury trials remain this term. Winder Stephens panel included Amy Mohland Kate Gallagher Mabel Livingston Frank Libenguth Ethel Kerr R Gallagher Elizabeth Griggs Emma Frank Randolph Hoover David Mikseh H H White Stephen Wolfer. Attorneys were Millard Hicklin for Winder and Morrison for Stephens.
