Two seniors were presented as homecoming royalty at Casefield’s football game. The event honored Werner Lowry and Pauline Hite families as Pam Hite and another student were named in the ceremony.
Astronaut Walter Schirra Jr. told officials aboard the USS Kearsarge that he needed more quiet time during his six orbital flights. He described minor suit temperature issues and two self-described goofs, and noted slow yaw changes during the fourth and fifth orbits. The mission ended with a 4.25 mile splashdown near the carrier Sigma 7 completed its 160000 mile journey.
Washington Lions Club to hold Lions Club Day for the Blind on Saturday October 6. West Chester workers will sell candy rolls and seek contributions to fund an eye research center at University Hospital in Iowa City. total $72,000 raised toward the project with $28,000 more needed to qualify for matching federal funds.
President Kennedy plans a busy weekend of electioneering in Kentucky Ohio Michigan and Minnesota despite a head cold. He will also meet West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt and attend a White House lunch honoring Crown Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia before departing from Andrews Air Force Base for the first full weekend of the 1962 congressional campaign.
Mrs Minnie Elizabeth Schultz 67 of East Pleasant Plain dies after six weeks illness at Jefferson County Hospital. Funeral Tuesday 9 am at St Joseph's Church East Pleasant Plain. burial there. In Paris the National Assembly passed a censure motion against President Charles de Gaulle and government premier Georges Pompidou by a vote of 280 to end his mandate. De Gaulle remained at the Elysee and left for Rheims to observe army maneuvers as Pompidou stayed as caretaker.
Washington County authorities moved quickly after a teacher at West Chester was diagnosed with infectious hepatitis. A mass immunization effort within 48 hours involved 14 shots for pupils and staff at the West Chester school center led by Mrs. Harry Suter and Dr. BJ Vosika to prevent further spread.
The United States moves to curb Cuba trade with a tougher program aimed at non-communist ships. Measures could take effect in about two weeks, threatening loss of government cargo for ships engaged in Soviet Cuba trade and denying port access to ships carrying military or Communist cargo. A presidential order may bar U S firms from trading with Cuba, with a Chayes-led committee to finalize details as Castro’s economic troubles worsen.
Mrs Edna Chloe Ross aged 84 died unexpectedly at her home near Winfield. She was the mother of Ted Ross of Washington. Funeral Sunday at 2 pm in Winfield Methodist Church with ministers Pattison and Fish. Burial prayers at Barton McKasson at 1 30 pm. Survived by daughter Eva Swanson sons Ted Ray and Dean brothers John and Dal Fleagle nine grandchildren seven great grandchildren. She was born November 9 1877 in Henry County and was a longtime Winfield resident member of the Methodist Church. Her husband Arthur E Ross died December 8 1950.

Mrs. L M Dallmeyer 75 died at 5 30 a m in Muscatine General Hospital after illness at her farm home east of Columbus Junction. Funeral plans were pending at Stacy Funeral Home Columbus Junction. Survived by husband four sons Carl Lewis Harlan Kenneth and daughters Lola Trement Helen Thompson Lois Lowe and a sister with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In Chicago and across the Midwest hog prices slumped as much as 1.75 per hundredweight amid an NFO dispute with market officials. NFC president Staley blamed buyers and processors for the decline while traders said the drop was an inevitable result of a month long NFO campaign to withhold hogs.
In the second game, San Francisco Giants lead New York Yankees 1 to 0 after six innings as a run in the first inning stands. The Giants hold the slim edge as the contest continues. Also, the Christian Church Men’s Brotherhood plans a 6:30 p.m. meeting Monday with Rev. Lloyd Latta speaking on his England and Berlin trip.
