Theater Manager R. E. Brown reports the Harlan bond drive exceeded its target in September with a tech quota of 18 635 dollars and a total of 125 564 dollars raised.
Leland Yaley age 19 of Burlington is hospitalized with a severe hand injury after signaling for a ride and thrusting his hand into the path of a car driven by Swen Gustafson. The incident occurred while Yaley was hitchhiking.
Des Moines reports that Fire Prevention Week will be observed in Iowa with organizations planning an active campaign to reduce fire loss. The effort aims to cut waste and destruction by promoting safety practices and awareness.
Women from Pella churches gathered for koffie tidj to sew 68 army quilts for the United Service Women of America. The quilts were completed in two weeks and sent to Camp Elliott in California, a marine training camp.
Dr James Ol son of Bradgate and Morningside College graduate completed a biography of J Sterling Morton founder of Arbor Day. He was honored at Nebraska University on the book’s release containing 18 chapters. He leaves Humboldt today with draftees to begin army service.
DES MOVIES Although actual meat rationing is not scheduled to begin until the first of the year the quality and quantity of meat available to the public is diminishing perceptibly day by day. Choice cuts no longer are abundant and the supplies at some counters are virtually sold out by Saturday night. Many housewives have turned to meat substitutes recommended by the government such as poultry fish cheese milk eggs and dry beans.
Charles H Lin genfelter, Humboldt county’s last Civil War veteran, marked his 101st birthday with five generations present. Born in New York, he moved to Iowa in 1866 after serving in a Wisconsin infantry regiment. His hobby is solitaire and he continues daily walks, recently buying defense bonds.
Walter D. Pringle aged 66 of Long Beach California died at a Long Beach hospital after a two month illness. Funeral services will be held in Ollie Iowa with arrival details not available. He is survived by his wife and two sisters Mrs. Frank Kendall of Santa Ana California and Mrs Dickinson of Brighton.
The 1,526 ton submarine Grunion was lost in the Pacific during World War II. Commander Lincoln Abbe of Quincy Massachusetts was missing at sea. The Grunion, named for a Pacific coast fish, carried 10 torpedo tubes and 21 knots surface speed.
A boy riding a bicycle beside parked cars near City Hall was struck when a car door opened. Roth, the pedestrian unable to name full details, was thrown to the pavement with a scalp wound skin burns and bruises. Mrs. Frank Barden had parked east of City Hall and opened her door just as the incident occurred.
Ames residents learn the Iowa State College Symphony Orchestra will give its first public concert on November 22 during the fall term. Director Alvin R. Edgar announced the group will also perform on two additional occasions this year.
The Lexington community holds an annual homecoming Sunday October 11 at the Lexington church. Rev. H. W. Munster of West Chester will deliver the 11 am sermon. A cooperative dinner follows worship. A program begins at 1:30 pm and the public is invited.
Harry Bryson Iowa Farm Bureau director will speak at the Washington County Farm Bureau annual meeting in the United Presbyterian church basement at 8 p.m. Friday October 9. Election of officers and directors for 1943 and adoption of policies will be discussed. All members and friends invited. refreshments to follow.
In Chungking on Oct 5 Willkie reported a long conference with Chou En Lai and a separate breakfast talk to note he spent three hours and forty minutes last night with Chiang Kai Shek on UN issues. He said he will confer again with Chiang. In Moscow Roy Henderson led the Russian section of the state department and Administrator Standley arriving from Kuibyshev. The Foreign Policy Association said a majority of Americans oppose economic commitments that would lower living standards after the war.
Iowa to hold the first state-wide war production rally October 10 in Des Moines under Farm Bureau federation auspices. Francis Johnson, state president, says invitations were sent to AAA county committees, farm security groups, soil conservationists and other farm groups to form a unified Iowa front to boost food production for the war effort.
Dorothy Maynor, renowned Black soprano, will perform at Iowa State College on October 23, becoming the first guest artist to appear there. The event marks a notable cultural highlight for Ames.
Prof. Tolbert MacRae, head of the Music Department, said the concert would be held in State Gymnasium as part of the new school year activities.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees 4 to 2 to win the World Series. After a 2-2 tie, Kurowski hit a ninth inning home run with Walker Cooper aboard, giving the Cardinals the decisive lead as Beazley and Ruffing pitched the full game.
Gary Lee Klopfenstein eight months old son of Mr and Mrs Lafe Klopfenstein died yesterday morning at their home five and half miles southeast of town. Funeral Wednesday at two o clock at Jones funeral home in charge of Rev Er L Stuempfig burial Elm Grove cemetery. Gary born Feb 12 1942 son of Lafe and Maxine Maurer Klopfenstein. Surviving are his parents two brothers Clive and Kermit paternal and maternal grandparents.
The North Side Gidley's and State cafes will be closed from one to five o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
Truck drivers urged to assemble at Central Park by 8:00 A M for the Victory day salvage collection. Glenn Mace, chair of the truck committee, says more trucks are needed though 89 have already offered. A published list names numerous firms and individuals providing trucks and drivers for the effort.
Captain Nate Young arrives Saturday night in Fort Madison from Camp SBowie Texas. He will spend a ten day leave with his wife and daughter Mary and relatives.
Citizens urged to attend a rally on the square at 8 pm to receive instructions for the tomorrow metal salvage drive. Speakers include T L Brookhart and E D Morrison Jr with coordination by Cloud Willits and R E Dougherty for central park registrations.
The American Legion Posts and Auxiliaries in the first district plan a joint fall conference in Fort Madison on Wednesday October 7 with about 400 expected attendees. The program starts at 2 PM at the Legion hall and closes with a 6 30 PM banquet and dance. State Commander Dan O Brien of Des Moines and Auxiliary State President Mrs Mable Tracey of Manchester will attend. The event mirrors a statewide October schedule under the theme all out for defense.
