New York Yankees defeated Philadelphia Phillies 1 to 0 in Game 1 at Shibe Park before about 34,000. Vic Raschi pitched for the Yankees against Jim Konstanty in relief for the Phillies as both clubs showed strong pitching and tight defense.
William Smart of the Smart Implement company was named president of the Washington Kiwanis club at the annual officers election held today at the YMCA. New officers assume January 1, 1951. Also elected were Paul Horak vice president Sam McCreedy Dr L B Eicher Ted Johnson James Brooks Dale Booth R L Muench and Giff Morrison to the board of directors.
The Henry county post will hold its regular meeting at Olds on Tuesday October 10.
Navy recruiter J M Burke reports a local youth, Robert Thompson, scored a perfect 100 on a Navy intelligence exam. Thompson, 1947 Washington High School graduate, lives with Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Thompson at 701 East Madison and recently worked for Penney store. He heads to Des Moines for a physical, then to Great Lakes for recruit training and Memphis for air training if approved.
The commentary says Red troops are retreating to regroup, signaling further heavy fighting in Korea. US forces still clear pockets above Seoul while South Korean troops push beyond the 38th parallel on the east coast, with a major Green line likely north of the parallel as North Korea prepares defenses from Pyongyang to Wonsan.
Rosa Page Welch a negro mezzo soprano will perform tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the Methodist church. The concert is sponsored by the YWCA World Fellowship committee with Mrs Artemas Brown as accompanist. A free will offering funds concert expenses for world fellowship. The program includes Handel pieces and spirituals by Burleigh and MacGimsey among others with intermission.
Reverend T C Polk of the local Christian church urges all music lovers to attend a concert by Rosa Page Welch the Negro mezzo soprano at the Methodist church tomorrow evening at six. Welch led song at a Cincinnati convention and is praised for her voice. A free will offering will be taken and the public is invited.
The Washington YMCA invites all boys and girls to a free movie session Saturday at 10:30. Artemas Brown secretary notes the morning program will feature several comedies and cartoons for attendees.
Leon Beatty American Legion post held its regular meeting to plan the Armistice day banquet. Commander Marion Rapp named committees including Bill Barth and Tommy Tucker for entertainment and Les Hamil as table committee chair. Three members, Robert Amlong Bernard Houseal and Rex Nickerson, were reported as admitted to veterans hospitals. Maynard Brown and Rapp reported on the district fall convention in Muscatine, and Marty Whittaker and E. E. Ward will attend the national convention in Los Angeles. County commander Charles Hotle announced the county Legion meeting for Wednesday Oct 11 in Ainsworth.
T EB Wood of Des Moines representing Western Waterproofing Co in Washington outlined plans for exterior repair work on the Washington Methodist church. Work, authorized at 11 852 dollars, includes sand blasting of exposed stone, new facing for unsound areas, mortar joint repairs, stone replacement, and chimney rebuilding with buff brick.
Interest runs high for the Evening Journal tall corn contest with queen candidates named and entries due by 10 AM Saturday. Rules specify entry requirements, vote mechanics, and cash prizes up to 10 dollars for the tallest stalk, plus additional local prizes.
Lor den senior accordion band directed by Leonard Kokesh performed at the Eastern Iowa Light and Power cooperative annual meeting in Wilton Junction. About 12 000 attendees and 3000 pounds of barbecued beef were served. Notable band members from Lorden Music included Gordon Morris Junior Neff Richard Meyers Jim Meyers Sandra Greenfield Audrey Wittetoe Mary Catherine Friese Rita Lorack Joann Fulton Pat Schupbach Janet Robertson George Janecek and Marcella Soukup.
The J C Penney store in Washington marks two birthdays this month. The store, 26 years in town, and manager C R Wilson who arrived ten years ago in October celebrate together. The shop moved from the original building to Crail and now sits in a modern location. Only four local managers have led Penneys: S A Dickerson, C F Lund, D F Barnes, and C R Wilson.
The local Kiwanis club was awarded a Treasury certificate for its work in the United States Savings Bond drive conducted between May 15 and July 4. The recognition highlights the club's participation and support of the national savings effort.
American and South Korean units have sealed the 38th parallel and a major push is expected within days. The South Korean sixth division moved to Jinran after a rapid 100 mile advance, with Allied air and naval support and units from Britain and Australia set to play key roles in the planned final battles against North Korean forces.

Cealo Mohawk the nationally known underwater swimmer and world record holder presented a program at the YMCA pool Tuesday night attracting a large crowd. He demonstrated fancy underwater swimming techniques and floating stunts while many Y's Men and other onlookers watched.
Des Moines weather: fair and cool with frost or freezing temps tonight across most of Iowa. Thursday looks fair and warmer with highs 65 to 70 and winds from the west-northwest shifting to southwesterly. Friday expects fair, warmer conditions with highs near 70 to 75 and Saturday partly cloudy and above normal temperatures.
