Keokuk voters approved up to 100000 in bonds to buy equip and operate a municipal airport by a 1385 to 372 margin and backed the airport’s operation by an airport commission. Tax levy set at not more than three fourths of a mill. no site selected yet.
Lake View school students collected 226063 pods totaling about 4550 pounds in a milkweed pod drive ending Sept 30. Eighth grader Ruth Flink led girls with 1628 pods and 40 bushels while freshman Dai Meister led boys with 19780 pods. Receipts go to the Junior Red Cross fund.
John Burl of Omaha Nebraska one of four convicts who escaped from a state reformatory last New Year’s day was found guilty of assault with intent to commit murder for stabbing two guards during the escape. District Judge Floyd Philbrick will sentence him Friday. Frank Brown of Poplar Bluff Missouri went on trial on the same charge while two others await hearings. The four already had been convicted of escape and given five more years for the break that included kidnapping the deputy warden and a guard captain.
Pvt William Amber 25 and Eugene Amber sailors from Ottumwa naval air base were jailed in Albia after an alleged attack on Capt Herbert L Ballard who was passing through from the west coast. The private faced charges for the incident and is reported AWOL from Fort Devens where he worked as a cook. The sailor brother was taken to the Ottumwa air station by shore patrol. Ballard received treatment for injuries at the air base.
More than 60 American Liberator bombers flew a 2500 mile round trip to Balikpapan in Borneo and dropped 74 tons of high explosives on Japan s major fuel storage center. The raid faced heavy anti aircraft fire and 30 Japanese interceptors, with seven enemy planes shot down and three Liberators lost. A 2900 ton harbor vessel was seriously damaged.
OPA aims to ease the 1941 holiday toy shortage by enforcing price controls across manufacturing, wholesaling, and retailing. The national campaign seeks to keep toy and game prices in line with fall and winter levels, assisting Santa Claus and families with budgets.

S A Ossian of Indianola was named to succeed J W Chandler as county extension director by the Washington County Farm Bureau board. His appointment awaits Iowa State College approval, with Ossian arranging to start next Monday and Chandler set to move to Boone by November 1.
Alfred E. Smith dies at Rockefeller Institute hospital at age 70 after a month of illness. He was four time New York governor and 1928 Democratic presidential candidate. Reverend John Healy and Dr. Raymond T. Sullivan voiced tributes as reporters gathered.
Democrats of the county gather Thursday evening for a pot luck supper at the Knights of Columbus hall. They plan to hear radio addresses by President Roosevelt Judge Mitchell the state candidate for overseer and the national Democratic Party chairman. County chairman Harry Dye said more speakers may be heard in person. Alverta Kelly of Nichols is expected to be present.
Last night six Washington county men left by bus and train for Jefferson Barracks Missouri for armed services induction. They joined twelve registrants summoned for pre induction examinations. Maurice H Farrier of Brighton seeks immediate induction if he passes the exam.

Soviet and Tito partisan troops closed in on Belgrade from two directions within 30 miles of the city. The Ukrainian army broke the enemy’s outer defenses along the Romanian border as tanks infantry and Cossack cavalry moved toward the capital. American jeeps with Soviet Tommy gunners raced forward as units pressed the German army in the Balkans.
Governor John W. Bricker of Ohio will deliver a brief address Thursday afternoon from a rear platform on a Rock Island Line special train due in Washington at 4 30 after an Ottumwa stop. Local officials and guests include Governor Hickenlooper and Lt. Gov. Blue. A small program with a high school band and other music is planned near the station.
Corporal Edwin Gow, 27, of the Algona prisoner of war camp, died Monday when the door of the car he rode in flew open and he was thrown to the ground. The body was sent to Independence, Co., for burial. He is survived by his wife.

Anna McKeown files a petition in district court alleging negligence by the defendant in a June 12 1944 collision at East Main Street and North Seventh Avenue Washington. The suit seeks 212.76 dollars for car damage plus interest from the accident date and costs. attorneys Messer Cahill and Henry B Bailey represent the plaintiff.
A Tuesday blaze destroyed the McKenney Seabury garage building in Logan. Oil and gas explosions damaged nearby structures as Woodbine and Missouri Valley fire crews aided the effort. Manager Art Daugherty said at least six cars two trucks a wrecker and much office equipment were lost. No total damage estimate was available.
