Johnson county coroner blames pilot R L Kendall for the Kendall tree airplane crash that killed two. He cites takeoff against wind, faulty handling, and reports clothing in the cockpit saturated with alcohol along with broken beer bottles in the wreckage.
Petitions will circulate among property owners to fund unpaved street surfacing using crushed rock from Bailey plant. Engineer Henry Vollmer notes per-lot costs may reach ten dollars depending on depth and width, with relief labor used to cut costs. The stripping project at Bailey quarry approved, to be paid in soybeans by farmers, as work relief expands across Washington county.
Charles D. Reed of the Weather and Crop Bureau said the weekly crop report shows killing frosts damaged about a quarter of Iowa corn. Late leaves and other growing parts in the northwest and northeast counties were harmed, but kernels remained largely unaffected in many areas.

Mrs Reginald Tracy Jr was slain by highway bandits after her husband staggered into a farm house. Police found the car in a ditch southeast of Manchester with her body in the rear seat. Sheriff investigated and noted possible criminal attack while Tracy recovered from a skull injury and incoherent statement.
Washington Methodist Church plans a Loyalty Day rally aligned with the national event. Special guests include the home department of the Sunday school and older members unable to attend. district official Rev. Guy J. Fancher will speak at the Epworth League rally in Riverside Church at 2 40 pm.

Funeral services for Sor Junior Nesh and two Nichols high school students killed in a Tuesday evening car crash near Conceville will be held tomorrow morning in the new school auditorium gymnasium that was to be dedicated Friday night.
Elmer Ralph and Virell Krantz, brothers near Crawfordsville, are the first enrolled in Washington County corn husking contest. Elmer and Ralph placed third and fifth in last year’s state meet. Only one field is offered near Kalona pending other arrangements. The county contest will occur in late October before the state event, with limited entrant acceptance.
The State theater unveils a major upgrade moving screen and sound gear on rollers in one minute, expanding stage depth to thirty feet and adding eighteen feet of floor space. The Graham theater, its former identity, fades as the modernized venue showcases enhanced interior and stage facilities.
Dr. Eugene A. Gilmore was inaugurated as the 16th president of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The ceremony drew about 10 000 attendees including Gov. Clyde L. Herring and Gov. Frank Lowden, with a parade, speeches from former presidents, a noon banquet for 760 guests, and a formal reception at the new Memorial Union.
Miss Elizabeth Wyss district advisory nurse for the state emergency relief and Dr. C A Boies president of the state board of health spoke at the October meeting of St James Parent-Teacher Association. Manager Pratt credited Curris Manufacturing Co. for designing and building the new feature. He said the improvement doubles the theater’s usefulness and reflects a plan he envisioned about three years ago as the State theater continues to move forward.
Charles Van Doran died at his West Tyler Street home after a six year illness from asthma and heart condition. Funeral services set for 10:30 Saturday at Sherman’s Funeral Home conducted by Rev W J Stevens with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by his wife Lola Hogan, a step-daughter Verle Brinning of Washington, and several Indiana relatives. Born July 11 1856 in Warren County Indiana, he had lived in the area since 1849, previously married to Martha Payne and then Martha Britton.

George Patterson Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Iowa and Ed Hicklin Republican candidate for Constables from the first district will speak at a West Chester political meeting on Thursday October 11 at the school gymnasium. The event, announced by KR Ferguson, is billed as one of the county’s largest campaign gatherings. Patterson has campaigned statewide while Hicklin covers the first district. Last night Patterson debated Lt Governor N G Kraschel at Newton.
Sunday marks the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Prank L. Wilson. Married in this city on October 7, 1884, they will host a home gathering at 21 East Main Street with visitors from 2 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Their daughter Mrs Rene Radenoch of Boston and other relatives will attend.

Mr and Mrs Carleton Haven and family are notified of the death of E M Haven in Ta Vort City Iowa. The 81 year old died this afternoon at three. Funeral is expected tomorrow as the Haven family plans to return Saturday.
John and Walter Dearing living ten miles southwest of Washington each paid 25 dollars after arrest by Night Marshal Blaine Holmes for breach of the peace. Disturbances at the Brown Mug and later at the city jail prompted Judge D W Hamilton to report noise. Holmes took them to the city jail. they attacked him injuring his hand, breaking glasses, and damaging cots and windows while confined.
