President Coolidge opened the international radio telegraph conference in Washington with a call for candid discussion and mutual conciliation among delegates from about 50 countries. He urged conciliation and cooperation to elevate radio’s use to beneficial public service and warned against its potential for harm without moral development.
At a meeting yesterday the Second United Presbyterian trustees were authorized to dispose of church property and the congregation voted to dissolve the church corporation. The merger with First Church Washington is nearly complete with transfer letters to follow Keokuk presbytery approval. Members already worship together awaiting formal transfer.
Keota October 8 Hanna P Newton Keota's oldest citizen celebrated his 89th birthday on Saturday September 17 He became a great great grandfather on September 12 when a son was born to Mrs Fern Ludwig Sundries Davenport Iowa He is possibly the oldest Odd Fellow and Mason in this region membership spans since 1858 for the I O O F and 1864 for the Masons He voted for Lincoln in 1860 and has supported the Republican ticket ever since He is the father of seven daughters one son and has numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren born in New Hampshire Connecticut and Iowa
Los Angeles October 4 Delegates to the 47th annual convention of the American Federation of Labor planned a busy session Johnson of California a U S Senator would speak on the principles of labor while Secretary of Labor James J Davis would outline the administration's views on labor policies for the gathering.
The Washington high school orchestra directed by Milburn McKay and the girls glee club led by Norma Reaney opened the morning session of the county teachers institute with a half hour of performances. Earlier, Crawfords ville orchestra under Cuth Hultquist and Washington junior high glee club directed by Reaney performed, with Wellman high school band to play this afternoon. Prof. H. E. Bradford of the University of Nebraska spoke on The Big Idea and Charles Miller shared experiences from Albia in a discussion on Our Neighbors Kids. Miller urged prudent spending by school directors, noting his role on Albia’s school board. About 130 teachers attended the dinner at the Y yesterday evening with talks by Montcom ery, Reif, and Jennings, and Bradford delivering the evening address. The institute closes this afternoon.
The Junkers seaplane G-24 began its trans Atlantic westbound flight from Norderney at 4 45 p m heading for Lisbon Payal Azores and Newfoundland then to New York Pilots Fritz Loese Starke and Loewe accompanied by mechanic Rudolph Fletther with a woman passenger rumored but not confirmed aboard and a second plane following to prove regular service viability.
Coach Harry Rice believes his Washington team must improve blocking tackling and overall fundamentals after losses to Burlington and Ottumwa. He begins a week long drill while preparing for Williamsburg and a key West Chester clash with Muscatine looming October 15. Walker Ia Oct 4 The Walker Exchange Bank closed its doors becoming the town's second bank failure in six months. Deposits total 300000 with 50000 capital and 25000 surplus. Directors say the bank will be reorganized and reopened in a few weeks to protect depositors.

The Washington Oil company plans to open a new filling station at East Washington and South Third streets next Saturday. A room west of the station will also be relocated, and work began August 22. On opening day a free gallon of gasoline is offered with every five gallons purchased.
A brown leather suitcase contained two women’s pocket books and numerous silk textured clothing items, suggestively packed by the thief. The scene indicates a deliberate concealment of valuables within the case.
General Jose Alvarez announced the execution of Francisco Serrano and 14 followers near Cuernavaca after a failed revolt. President Calles claimed the uprising was crushed with about 800 rebels, while Serrano and Gomez had threatened to revolt and Calles denied favoritism toward any presidential candidate.
Col D J Palmer is honored with a silver loving cup presented by the Daughters of Union Veterans at their 37th National Convention in Grand Rapids Michigan on September 14 2927. The inscription notes Palmer as Past Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic and praises his support of patriotic organizations nationwide.
Trials continue in the case brought by A Moyers administrator for Shirley Markman, killed in a 1926 Ames intersection crash. Defendants include Everett Holland and Alfred Alleman of Elkhart, Holland driving the Alleman car owned by Alleman Sr. The suit seeks damages of $15,000.
James Connor aged 50 of Cedar Rapids was killed when his car was hit by a Waterloo Cedar Falls and Northern interurban near Shaver station as he traveled to visit a sick relative. The collision demolished the automobile on the spot.
Rotarians enjoyed a Fox theater program headlined by a feature about a young businessman's aim for his biggest year. Preceded by a news reel and a comic sketch starring three ducks and a kitten, the show highlighted advertising specialties like calendars and pencils as tools for good will in business.
Governor John Hammill will speak at Keota's dedication of the new 70,000 dollar high school gym and auditorium on Wednesday afternoon. Col. J. Wilson will introduce him, with County Supt. Harry McVier presiding. the building now valued at 150,000 dollars houses a large auditorium, modern stage lighting, a fireproof projection room, and a consolidated school with tuition revenue around 7,000 dollars yearly. Preston Wolf has been selected to play Aunt Lucia in a high school DAR comedy. Allen Rhind 38 year old son of the Rev and Mrs John Rhind of the Presbyterian church Iowa City was struck by a car while crossing the street in front of his home. He suffered a triple fracture of the skull and has not regained consciousness.
Lambert Van Wyhe, 13, a local high school student from a Perkins farm, is near death after a passenger train struck his car on the way to school. He suffers a fractured skull and severe injuries to arms legs and body.
