In Columbia, South Carolina, General Ike Eisenhower denounces the administration as a scandal a day regime and claims its failures are too large to be concealed. In New York, Clare Boothe Luce asserts a Red underground ran 23 federal agencies and stole most American secrets.
In New York, Preacher Roe and Eddie Popadino pitched as the Dodgers trailed the Yankees 2-1 through five innings of the World Series third game. Fans packed Yankee Stadium for the 69,000 attendance as weather favored football more than baseball.
Sen Estes Kefauver told Democrats in Cedar Rapids that creeping socialism is false describing it as rising farm home and business ownership. He cited 1880 75 percent farm ownership then 1935 drop to 50 percent and now back to 75 percent. He accused Gen Dwight Eisenhower of running off with the Democratic farm plank.
Perth reports Britain exploded its first atomic weapon today in the Monte Bello Islands off Northwest Australia. Early word described it as a possible hydrogen bomb or a small A-bomb on a steel tower, with later speculation of it being a novel device.

Forecasters expected a warm surge eastward but warned of another cold snap from Canada arriving Saturday.
In Morecambe England the Labor Party closed its annual conference with Clem Attlee as leader and Aneurin Bevan emerging as a stronger contender. Bevan aims to push Britain toward distancing from the United States and will renew his bid when Parliament resumes in two weeks. Bevan defeated Attlee's trusted lieutenants in the local elections.
Maj. Frederick C. Blesse, America's top jet ace in Korea, bailed out into the Yellow Sea after fuel loss. He shot down a MIG-15 in a searing chase and was rescued by a Navy amphibious plane. American Sabrejets claimed three MIGs destroyed and four damaged in the day’s air battles over North Korea.
Washington reports that hard coal operators won a 20 cent per ton ceiling price increase to offset a new contract with John L. Lewis. They will also pay into the miners welfare fund the same 20 cent per ton amount. Soft coal interests seek government approval of their settlement with the miners chief.
A Harvester plant worker who joined a back-to-work movement was beaten to death near his home as strikes spread across eight midwestern Harvester plants. Police report William Foster, 52, was attacked by a man with an iron pipe while leaving picket lines linked to the Farm Equipment United Electrical Workers union. The incident follows another beating of a Rock Island truck driver amid related labor actions.
This week the Freshwaters Coal and Supply firm observes its seventh business anniversary dating to October 1945 when the late How ard Freshwaters bought the business from Cy Bush. Ralph Gibson serves as manager.

Harold KK Clark of Kirkville was fined 300 dollars and costs in district court this morning on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Gov. Adlai Stevenson assailed Dwight D. Eisenhower in Cincinnati accusing him of selling out to Republican isolationists for party unity. The Democratic frontrunner framed the clash near Taft’s hometown, joking with Kentucky crowds before urging Kentuckians to vote November 4.

Farner of Israel, Heliel Neuman, 22, staying with the Joe Jones family near Ainsworth since Sept. 15, says Americans are hospitable and the Joneses are excellent hosts. Neuman visits Washington county as part of the International Farm Youth Exchange observing farming, social life, and conservation practices, noting similarities and concerns with Israel.
John May of Ainsworth dies at his farm southeast of town after a yearlong illness. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Steefel officiating and a graveside Mason service in Ainsworth Cemetery. He was born June 9 1875 in Armington Illinois and lived in Washington county 54 years. He married Amanda Hightshoe in 1894. she died in 1951. Surviving are six children, 18 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
On Cheju Island Korea a double guard of American soldiers surrounded the war prisoner camps housing Chinese Communist inmates as a precaution after a riot that left 66 prisoners dead and 120 wounded. A Clark headquarters spokesman said there was no specific shoot to kill order, though commanders could interpret Clark's directive to use any force necessary.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson denounces Moscow’s demand for Kennan's recall as shameful and unprecedented since 1933. Kennan, 48, creator of containment, is to return to Washington for consultation while not officially recalled. Moscow expects the demand to stand as Soviet Premier Stalin pursues a peace offensive.
British journalist Alan Winnington told United Press that General William F. Dean is alive and held by Communist forces in North Korea. Winnington said he did not know Dean’s exact camp or location but insisted he remains living and in captivity.
An explosion and fire at the Siesta Motel in Nevada Iowa killed Mrs Edward Karolewicz 42 and her daughter Mary Ellen 5 and injured three others including Mrs Cecil Flack and her son. Ten of twenty units were destroyed. The blast possibly stemmed from heating gas.
