Petitioners ask council to submit to voters a special election on issuing fifty thousand dollars in municipal airport bonds. The move was announced Sunday by Glen Myrland, chairman of the aeronautics board for the chamber of commerce.
Des Moines announces a statewide campaign to raise 2 169 801 for the National War Fund via the Iowa War Chest. Carl Weeks says campaigns run now and in early November across 9 counties and 26 cities, with 22 agencies in the drive aiming 115 million dollars for 1945 budgets. Keokuk County quota 14298. Rev J J Schoenfelder leads a campaign that has over subscribed by more than 4000.
Mason City police and stockyards officials report the theft of 10 Hereford cattle and a roan bull from Lind Sales stable. The cattle, owned by J R Dorsey the auctioneer, were valued at 1200 dollars with a quilt of 24000 red ration points. Nine 800 pound Hereford steers, a 1160 pound bull, and an 1800 pound heifer were taken suspected to be loaded into a waiting truck and trailer.
Gene Meyer age 16 of Dubuque died at Mercy hospital from a gunshot wound suffered while duck hunting on the Mississippi River. A companion says George Gruber fired at a duck from a boat around 7 am, striking Meyer in the head. Gruber summoned help from Maple Island. Meyer died shortly after arrival at the hospital. He is survived by his father and two brothers in the service.
Three companies of the first regiment of the Iowa State Guard held an all day bivouac and training near Knoxville in Yankee Hollow two miles east. Company F Newton led by Capt. Hugo C. Schulz, Company H Oskaloosa led by Capt. W. H. Ellsworth, and the Knoxville service company led by Capt. J. L. Collins mobilized at 6 am and marched from Oxville armory to the bivouac area where sergeants received compass and military map training.
In a plea for civilian support, the speaker praises USO and allied relief groups, urges donations to the National War Fund, and names 22 affiliated organizations aiding troops, refugees, and war-stricken regions across Europe and Asia.
Nearly 400 workers, including 403 appointed, will begin county wide solicitation for the National War Fund quota of 16 654 with a kickoff meeting tonight at 8 p m in the county high school. Clinton will address the gathering on the fund and Y M C A activities abroad and at home.
Registrations of boys reaching the age of 18 for military service were higher than usual in September with 13 enrolling on their 18th birthday in the county last month. Names listed include Robert J. Stumpf Kalony James E. McFarland Ringworth Buel E. Meeks William C. Rickey Virgil K. Hering Donald P. Sieren.

Susannah McClintic Tomlinson, 86, longtime Washington county resident, died Sunday at 11 20 a m at her daughter’s home in Washington. She had lived with her daughters since her husband’s death in 1914 and recently spent weeks at St Luke’s hospital Cedar Rapids. Funeral Tuesday at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Rev Thomas C Polk. burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born September 10 1858 at Wayland Iowa, helped found the Washington Christian church, and is survived by daughters C C Hillhouse Cedar Rapids and W N Bradford Washington. Her son Allen T Tomlinson preceded her in death.
Mrs Mary A Ledger 68 died at Henry County Memorial hospital Mt Pleasant after a long illness including diabetes Funeral services set for Wednesday at St Alphones Mt Pleasant Ledger feed store on the square to close Tuesday and Wednesday She had lived in Mt Pleasant all her life She leaves her son Al Ledger of Washington two daughters Mrs James Watts Keota Mrs Glenn Dunlavy Mt Pleasant and Frank Ledger Burlington Her husband died over 35 years ago.

American forces under Lt Gen Courtney Hodges push through the Siegfried line on a broad front north of Aachen. They cross the Dusseldorf Aachen railroad and the Wurm river after a two hour bombardment, advancing over a mile past Siegfried pillboxes toward Merkstein amid heavy German resistance.
