Washington merchants sponsor the annual free pork barbecue in Central Park. Long lines formed as residents queued for porkburgers prepared by the Washington County Pork Producers and Porkettes, with sandwiches served until exhausted.
In Indianapolis UPI reports the first mass swine flu immunization began today with Mayor William H. Hudnut receiving the first vaccination. The event marks the start of a nationwide effort to curb the outbreak as health officials emphasize rapid rollout and broad public participation.
Washington hosts weekly basic training courses for water works and water pollution control plant operators across a 16 county southeast Iowa region. About 150 people attend at the Washington YMCA, sessions run Wednesdays 7 to 10 pm for eight weeks, with October 20 skipped. Sponsored by the Department of Environmental Quality and state water groups, staffed by University of Iowa personnel. Certificates issued to those attending at least six of eight sessions. About 50 cities and towns participate.

In Des Moines two officers were seriously wounded and the assailant killed after a gunfight that erupted while officers questioned two occupants of a late model car about harassment reports. Patrolman Michael Nehring remained in critical condition after surgery, and Patrolman James Osterquist was in satisfactory condition. The suspect, Joseph White, 22, was killed. the driver Bobby Kittrell, 32, was released after questioning. White had Davenport arrest warrants dating from September for assault with intent to harm related to a August shooting in Davenport.
