Seven people died in Iowa road crashes on Saturday and a farm youth perished Sunday in a tractor overturn. The toll raised 1962 Iowa traffic deaths to 425, with seven deaths including a triple fatality and two fatal head on collisions near Fort Dodge and Batavia.
The Iowa Basha of the China- Burma India Veterans Association announces its fall meeting in Washington on Saturday October 13. World War II CBI vets are invited with registration at the VFW Club. Gene Brauer national CRIVA commander from Milwaukee will attend and speak.
Carl Henry Mayer 73 of Keota died Sunday at 10 30 p m in his home. He was a retired farmer who had lived in Keota four years. Funeral services 2 p m Tuesday at Wesley Methodist Church Keota with Rev. Orrin Potter in charge. Burial in Keota Cemetery. Powell Funeral Home of Keota in charge. Born Oct 4 1888 in Dutch Creek Township Washington County to Anthony and Martha Luers Mayer. Married Elsie Henderson April 26 1911. Survived by wife, son Richard of Keota, daughter Mary Romoser of Keota, six grandchildren, three brothers Walter of Des Moines, Arthur and Homer of Brighton, sister Mrs Car Klein of St Louis Mo. Preceded by parents and one sister.
Sioux City reports three more possible diphtheria cases as a 21 member team fights the outbreak that has killed one and sickened 11 in two weeks. Dan Muldowney 14 Gloria Rudisil 13 from Sioux City and Jeffrey Sanders from Ute are listed as possible cases. Bruce Dworkin 12 is hospitalized as a possible carrier. Thirty eight carriers are quarantined, two in hospitals. The outbreak centers around the Clyde Osborn family with officials tracing sources while experts from the U S Communicable Disease Center assist.
The heaviest rail shipment in railroading history passed through Washington on Saturday afternoon. A giant pressure vessel on two heavy flat cars moved toward Kansas City and California, weighing 1,079,200 pounds including blocking. Milwaukee Road to Kansas City, Santa Fe to Deming New Mexico, then Southern Pacific to Avon California for Tidewater Oil.

Earl J. Lambert, 58, of Des Moines died today October 1 1962. Funeral set for 1 30 p m Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Car lyle Smith. burial Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Survivors include a half sister Ada Coppock Shenandoah sister Mabel Marham Washington and four brothers Sam Clyde Homer Washington Glen Davenport. Death under railroad bridge described as possible internal injuries not from a moving train. Watch stopped at 7 10 per medical examiner.
Mrs. R B McAllister 62 of 511 South Avenue B died at Mercy Hospital Iowa City Saturday. Funeral services 10 a m Tuesday Jones Funeral Home with Rev S Ray Blair in charge. Burial Newton Iowa Cemetery. Born Ester M Hall April 15 1900 Peoria Ill. Survived by husband daughter two grandchildren four brothers and one sister.
Washington Hi-Y boys will hold their first noon lunch of the new season Thursday October 4 in the YMCA community room. Tickets may be purchased from Don Kos Joe Jones Jim Mallory Dick Gallagher Rick Latta and Ed Weeks. Boys who have not yet turned in their membership applications are asked to do so at this meeting.
Union and federal authorities report a violent riot on the University of Mississippi campus. At least 15 cars burned or smashed as windows and streetlights were broken. Army units and U S marshals enforced order while former Maj. Gen. Edwin Walker faced arrest on charges of rebellion insurrection and seditious conspiracy in Oxford Mississippi.
The National Farmers Organization enters a second month of its holding action to keep cattle hogs and sheep off markets. Hog prices fell in midwestern markets despite 74 000 head shipments down 13 000 from last Monday while cattle shipments held near 101 000 head. Staley said the campaign proves farmers will stick together and will continue the fight to force higher prices though signs indicate many farmers are ignoring the hold.
Kathy Buchman was crowned 1962 Homecoming Queen at halftime of the Columbus Community West Branch game. Garry Idle was named Homecoming King. Columbus Junction won 19 to 0 as Forbes opened with a 35 yard touchdown and Quigley added a 15 yard score. Buser scored the final touchdown from three yards.
Washington viewers could watch the best two out of three playoff series between the Giants and Dodgers on WOC channel 6 NBC. Davenport station announced Sunday that all three west coast games would be carried. Today's opening game was to start at 1 45 p m with the same start time planned for each game.
James Meredith registers at the University of Mississippi and attends a history class amid a riot that left two dead and at least 75 injured. U.S. marshals and federal troops, totaling about 1,400, guard the campus while downtown Oxford also sees clashes.
More than 3 000 Buddy Poppies were sold Saturday raising 460 dollars for the local VFW Auxiliary. Ronnie Earll 13 and Ann Widmer 8 led the fundraising for boys and girls.

The Credit Bureau of Washington County was named the outstanding collection agency in Iowa for towns under 10 000 with a certificate of merit at the Associated Credit Bureaus of Iowa meeting in Des Moines. Fred Fluegel of Iowa City and Washington County bureaus was elected president of the Iowa Association.
Mrs. Oscar Miller and Mrs. Marvin Rinner were injured in an auto accident near Wayland. Miller suffered a broken shoulder and other injuries while Rinner had a badly lacerated scalp. both were taken to Washington County Hospital.
Weather brief from United Press International notes cloudy skies with possible rain or drizzle tonight and Tuesday. Cool. lows 40s north to 50s south, highs near 60 Tuesday, warmer midweek with partly cloudy conditions. Temperatures will run 2 to 5 degrees below normal through Saturday, with normal highs in the 60s to 70s and lows in the 40s to 50s. Precipitation expected from a quarter inch in the north to half inch in the southwest, early and late in the period.
