Ottumwa Laymen's League announces enforcement campaign on liquor and gambling laws. In a Sunday statement read by the executive committee, the group signals possible proceedings against the mayor and city council. The plan includes continuing investigations and publishing facts for Ottumwa residents.
Sioux City dairy farmers, members of the Milk Producers association totaling over 800 in Minnesota South Dakota Nebraska and Iowa, plan a Wednesday milk withholding to push for a higher price. They currently receive about 3.05 dollars per hundred pounds with 3 to 3.5 percent butterfat and seek a one cent increase refused by OPA and other agencies.
Karl Hoffmen of Ida Grove Iowa won the grand championship in the car load grain fed fat cattle show at the Chicago fat stock and grade cattle market competition. The win marks back to back honors after winning the 1942 event and the Hereford breed achieves consecutive years as champion for the first time.
Approximately 5,000 Iowa citizens have served in the Iowa state guard since its organization. Col. Arthur Wallace told 25 guard officers at a 2nd Battalion 1st Regiment officers school in Des Moines that Maj. M. R. Hawkins led the school with battalion staff and company officers as instructors. Maj. D. I. Blackburn noted that of the 5,000 who have served, 1,279 were discharged to enter federal armed forces, with many becoming non commissioned officers and 64 attaining commissioned status.
George Rederus, a newspaper carrier, entered Mrs. Clara Brock's Newton home when no one answered the door during a routine collection. He found the 81 year old on the floor asphyxiated by gas fumes. his prompt action likely saved her life.
Des Moines November 29 Farmers favor MacArthur or Dewey over Roosevelt in the December Farmer Speaks poll for Successful Farming. Willkie would likely win the farm vote against Roosevelt in a second race. Midwest farmers show a Dewey edge. Roosevelt would do better outside the Midwest.
Rep Henry O Talle of Pecorah praised by colleagues for a floor speech opposing the administration subsidy plan. As a Banking and Currency Committee member he argued the New Deal philosophy equates to governance by the state, opposing inflationary borrowed money schemes. He cited Jefferson that government should govern least and be for the people. Also noted is Rep Thomas B Martin and wife returning to Iowa City after attending a bomber show in Burlington.
United Press reports new Japanese aerial reinforcements flowing into the southwest Pacific. American and allied forces gain ground from the northern Solomons to New Guinea as Bougainville troops extend their Empress Augusta Bay beachhead. MacArthur’s bombers destroy at least five planes on the ground. U S bombers hit air bases around Bougainville with nearly 200 tons of explosives.
Wilbur Molison of a Grinnell area farm was elected to the Iowa Farm Bureau executive committee from the sixth district at the Des Moines convention. Former Washington county agent, he has long been a leader in Farm Bureau activities.
New licenses for motor vehicles in Washington county go on sale at the county treasurer's office on Wednesday December 1. 1944 stickers will be about half the size of 1943 and feature red background with white Iowa 1944 lettering on a black field.

Frank Macon 69 a prominent Washington county figure and longtime auctioneer died suddenly Saturday night from a heart condition at his home 815 West Madison street. He cried sales across the county for nearly four decades and worked as aSubscription solicitor for the Journal. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2:30 in the United Presbyterian church with burial in Cemetery. He had been active in the Christian church and Sabbath school, and his family were communicants at United Presbyterian.

Captain James Stewart, 35, former Hollywood star, arrives in the European theater as commander of an American Liberator bomber squadron. He will command a regular schedule on most missions until completing his tour or promotion. Stewart trained as a four motor bomber pilot in the United States after transfer from a fighter plane group.

Washington reports a January draft call of about 350000 men the highest monthly quota since last June. The War Department said peak army strength would reach 7.7 million on January 1 with only replacements needed thereafter. WAVES and WACS enlistment lag is cited as a major reason for the high January quota.
