Guard Jail Against Attack by Escapee
Murfreesboro authorities keep a heavy 24 hour watch at the Rutherford County jail to guard against escaped killer Spence Edwards possibly forcing an entry and freeing a brother jailed for murder. Edwards, 35, escaped a Georgia road gang Tuesday, kidnapped four people across four states, but none were harmed. His brother Harry, 30, is held on a murder charge, and Spence previously broke into the jail in 1947, releasing an older brother. Edwards fled to Georgia, where state agents say he killed two men during a spree. He was recaptured and sentenced to life in prison. Three Murfreesboro teens told officers Edwards kidnapped them at gunpoint and drove them to Birmingham before releasing them. He had briefly taken hostage a 17-year-old, Turner, during a prior escape. Turner was wounded when a shotgun discharged.
