Seventh polio victim dies in St Louis area
Earl McAllister, 25, died Sunday in a respirator from bulbar polio, the St Louis county chapter of the National Foundation said. He had not been vaccinated. A new case, Roy Dave, 3, son of Mrs Pearl Dave, was reported and also unvaccinated with some paralysis. The foundation noted 110 cases this year versus 27 in all of 1957, including three deaths.

State Police sought the trailer truck driver believed responsible for a multiple vehicle crash in the Allegheny Tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. An elderly couple, George W. Petrie Jr and Mabel Petrie, both burned to death in the gasoline fire. Dorothy Weiss, 58, of Chicago, was injured in the chain reaction that followed the side swipe of a pickup truck. The Petries were en route to Silver Spring s Maryland to visit relatives.

A Stratojet armed with a nuclear device exploded and burned on the flight line at Chennault Air Force Base Lake Charles Louisiana. The pilot Captain Joseph T Lyles was killed instantly and navigator 1st Lieutenant Robert R Simpson was burned. The base commander said the plane caught fire while parked and other aircraft were moved as a precaution with roadblocks removed after the fire was controlled.

Rescued After Seven Hours in Snow Drift
Irving Nord a 43 year old Milwaukee man was trapped in a snow drift beside his car for seven hours near Mountain Michigan. The chain incident caused the car to crash into a snow bank and trap him between the fender and jack. A passerby freed him the next morning and he was in good condition at a hospital.

A German shepherd named Duchess is credited with possibly saving a family of four when a north Wheaton ranch home valued at $25,000 burned.
