Samuel Arnold told police two men entered his New York delicatessen early Sunday with a hamper and forced his wife to fill it with beer and cash. When she hesitated, guns were shown and the register emptied. the pair escaped with beer and 300.
Eight persons died in Iowa from injuries suffered in traffic crashes over the weekend, raising the 1955 toll to 560. Victims include Charles Clancy of Des Moines, Harold Aldrich of Manchester, George Dexter near Davenport, Cecil Batey of New Sharon, Charles Young of Indianola, Dwayne McCreddy of Packwood, Frank Brajn of Cheyenne, and Frank Davis of Rock Island, with multiple others hospitalized in critical condition or grievous injuries.
Washington High School music students joined the All-State Music Festival at KRNT Theater Des Moines. About 500 musicians formed the chorus band and orchestra while 1,000 voice choir performed. Chorus: Charlotte Berry Roberta Wiley Gladys Knupp Cherry Luckenbill Steve Jones Gordon Morris Wayne Ganon Roger Booth. Band: Virginia Leet Ann Peterson Carolyn Crawford. Melvin Hill audited the band. Robert Ferrell led chorus.
The Iowa Tax Study committee will conduct a second public trial run of its findings at the courthouse in Fairfield on Wednesday December 7 from 10 a m to 3 p m. Representatives from various groups and eleven southeast Iowa counties including Washington have been invited. The committee created by the last legislature has spent months studying and interviewing tax payer leaders. Senator X T Prentis Mount Ayr is chairman.
Former President Harry S. Truman denied reports that he called Vice President Richard M. Nixon a vulgar name. The denial followed claims by the Los Angeles Examiner and Times that Truman made the remark upon arriving in Los Angeles on Edwin W. Pauley’s plane. Pauley supported Truman’s denial, saying the ex-president only refused to discuss the vice president.
Police search for two or three masked robbers who struck the Rock Island depot at Newton the Home Oil Station in Ottumwa and a Texaco station in Oskaloosa. The Newton depot agent said the bandit wore dirty overalls and used a double barreled shotgun to take 77 dollars. Ottumwa station cash was about 30 to 35 dollars in a second robbery in four days. In Oskaloosa 275 dollars was taken after a slugging and lock in the wash room.
Mrs Paul TeBockhorst of Washington won the Golden Harvest drawing held Friday afternoon in Central Park. Her name appeared on a 50 percent coupon and she received $375. Next week the fund will be worth $450 with a drawing set for Thursday at 2 30 p.m.
Five Russian agricultural specialists invited by Roswell Garst arrived in Coon Rapids Iowa after a long Moscow trip. They toured Garst’s farm and planned a relaxed day with breakfast and rest before potential further stops in Ames Minneapolis and Illinois.
Lime Creek Township became the first in Washington County to meet its 1956 Farm Bureau membership quota of 151. Captain Oral Norman and committee member Jake Litwiller reported the goal was reached after a 3½ day drive that began with a kick off breakfast last Tuesday. Estel Pilgrim noted Lime Creek was the fifth township in Iowa to hit the statewide target. Other townships have begun or will begin their drives in the coming week.
Iowa's 1955 corn crop is estimated at 492,062,000 bushels, making it the nation’s second largest after Illinois which totals 518,504,000. Subnormal rainfall and a late summer heat wave cut Iowa yields about 26 percent, though not as much as early projections warned.
Congressmen arrest threat referenced as Reds hall hints ike may run again after conference with Eisenhower in Gettysburg. Hall says president did not state his decision but looks healthy and optimistic about a second term and Nixon as running mate in 1956.
A group of four Americans including Rep. Edward Boland and Rep. Harold Ostertag were held at gunpoint for four hours by East German police and Soviet forces in East Berlin. The incident prompted a protest to Soviet headquarters, with U.S. officials arguing Berlin’s four power status exempts them from East German law.
A statewide alert seeks a 25-year-old unmarried cab driver for questioning in the rape slaying of 8 year old Janice May in Canton Illinois. The cab was found in Pekin and investigators say the killer used a 30 pound concrete piece to assault her. Janice left home Saturday to play with brothers. she was found by her brother and dog an hour later and died two and a half hours after the attack.
Sibley Iowa Mrs C B Morrison 78 died from suffocation after a fire destroyed the C B Morrison Warehouse building where she lived in the apartments above. The 100 by 30 foot concrete block complex housed a furniture storage area a highway cafe and damaged furniture buses and a hearse. Firemen blamed the cafe as the likely ignition point and investigated the fire's cause.
Washington retailers announce extended evening hours to aid shoppers. The chamber of commerce committee recommends 9 p.m. closings on December 7 14 and 19 23 for Christmas week with almost all stores expected to follow.
The University of Illinois football program has been led by just two head coaches since 1913, Bob Zuppke guiding from 1913 to 1941 and Ray Eliot taking over in 1941.
At a Farm Bureau meeting the Pork Lift committee accepted a bid from John Morrell Packing Co of Ottumwa for about 40000 pounds of pork to be sold below wholesale cost in local groceries on December 8. Other bids from Wilson Packing Hormel Dubuque Armour Rath and the Iowa Packing Co were also considered.
Washington's YMCA seeks a large Christmas tree for its holiday decorations. Y secretary Artemas Brown said past years saw offers to permit cutting a tree, but none this year. Those with a suitable tree are asked to call the YMCA at 23.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a community Christmas lighting contest for homes and apartments. Entries accepted before December 23. Prizes include engraved traveling trophies for outstanding effect originality and religious themes.
Grace E Shaw 75 of 533 South Iowa Avenue was found dead at home Sunday after sister alarm. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. Walther Scheuermann and Rev Milan Thompson officiating. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors: sister Mrs James Brooks and brother Alvin Shaw.

The government began a pork buying program announced Oct. 24 to lift sagging prices for farmers. Through late November it purchased over 10 million pounds of pork products and lard for school lunches and relief outlets, with ongoing aims to spend about 85 million dollars through next August.
Harry Duane McCreedy 54 of Packwood died after a car truck collision near Packwood. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday in Jones Funeral Home with Rev E K Parrott, burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Survivors include wife Carrie Mae Evans McCreedy five children two parents sister and brother eight grandchildren. Richard died in World War II.
Maurice Henry, chairman of the Jaycee committee, reports shipment of Christmas trees for the square merchants is delayed. Trees will not be erected on sidewalks around the square until next week, as planned this week. Merchants will decorate and light the trees themselves, as last year.
Funeral services for Samuel D Miller 86 will be held Tuesday at 10 a m at the Wellman Mennonite Church with Rev George S Miller officiating. Burial is in Lower Deer Creek cemetery. He was a retired farmer born November 12 1869 in Johnson County died Saturday survived by his wife son Ortis daughter Allie Parrott five grandchildren two brothers Charles and Alvin and sister Mrs John Schlabaugh. He was preceded in death by a son.
