Cedar Rapids resident Bernard Finnegan, 34, was rabbit hunting when his shotgun discharged while he climbed a fence. The shot grazed his left arm, but his heavy sheepskin coat shielded him from serious injury.
Ireton Edward Barents, 19, fractured his leg nine weeks earlier while digging a well near here. Last week the cast came off and he attempted to walk with a chair for support when it slipped, rebreaking the same leg. He now faces nine more weeks of recovery.
Norwood senior Chariton Emory Curtis, 16, died from a rifle bullet accidentally fired by classmate Zachias Stein, 16, at a Norwood area burting. The bullet struck Curtis in the brain, parents named Mr and Mrs Clark Curtis. investigators could not provide a full account.
Mount Vernon hosts the release of the Cornell English Club edition Children’s Books edited by Prof. Clyde Tull. The 42 page brochure features drawings, verse, and short stories by Jewel Bothwell Tull Glenda Hodge and John McGregor of Mount Vernon with art direction by Phillip Henderson and work by Elaine Thornes Clarinda Phyllis Wil Wheatland Marjorie Li Vernon Ruth Ohl Muscatine Mary McGregor Vernon Gertrude Ann gren Nenport Mary Anne Diley Havre Mont and TM McKerrow River Forest.

Humboldt County officers raided Clyde C. Coyle's offices describing it as a crap game. Eighteen people were present, cash and dice were seized, Coyle faces gambling house charges and was bonded at under 500 dollars after waiving to the grand jury in a hearing before Justice George J. Bicknell.
Ames Myron Johnson a 20 year old Iowa State freshman won the Thos Wilson national 4 H record book contest the first Iowa youth to win this award Johnson receives a free trip to Chicago and a 3500 scholarship as the prize for the national honor
Ames Iowa State College judging team shared first in the North American livestock judging championship at the International Livestock show. Team member Jacob Stimson of Clarinda won individual honors with nineteen dollars prize. other members include Don Rinner Washington Kenneth Hyde Henry Kling Newton and Paul McNutt Sheldon. Coached by Prof. J C Holbert.
Plan announced for the Kiwanis banquet honoring Clinton high school football players. University athletic board member Karl KE Leib Rollie Willis head basketball coach Russell Bush and Jerry Bush will attend the event at Hawkeye on November 30.
Des Moines reports say the State Safety council adopted a resolution calling for an independent motor vehicle department free of secretary of state control. Earl Miller pledged sweeping staff changes and hinted at dismissals affecting 70 percent of motor vehicle workers and two assistants.
Palo Alto county corn show will be held December 8 9 and 10 chairman Gene Cole said today. Dr M F Haygood health official will speak on Rural Health Problems and Murl McDonald extension service will address agricultural planning in the high school auditorium. Other speakers include Lester Kk Clapp Lawrence Brennan Rev J M Campbell Prof J L Robinson and Fred Hawley from Laurens.
Judge J. G. Patterson presided as Arthur D. Peterson and Arthur N. Corcoran case was held over due to new pleadings. Peterson claims a judgment of 205.55 with costs 14.50 from a New York action. Garten of Des Moines represents the plaintiff and Morri son Jr. the defense. Jury impaneling for the Vesely estate case to begin at 2 pm.
Iowa agricultural convention in Des Moines on December 14 will feature discussions of major agricultural topics and a review of the Iowa territorial centennial. Speakers include A R Corey and Thomas R Holbert on draft horses and poultry industry impact, with reviews by Robert Burlingame and Mrs Eugene Cutler and annual reports by J P Mullen and Corey.
In Chicago the CIO pickets massed before the stockyards gates forcing a stoppage of a planned entry by 125 police on standby. A rival AFL union pledged to send 20 meat parsers into the yards, but only 24 AFL members appeared at headquarters and no breach of the line occurred.
Iowa state executive council reports missing ballots in three counties Clay Jefferson and Henry as election officials investigate irregularities ahead of an upcoming vote. The notice urges transparency and orderly ballot handling to maintain election integrity across the state.
The election canvassing board adjourned its final meeting until the call of the president and sent telegrams to three incomplete counties urging early ballot submission. With a twenty day canvass window, completion before short terms seems unlikely, leaving Secretary of State O'Brien in office until an official declaration of the winner.
Dr Eddie Anderson named new head football coach at the University of Iowa with a reported 12500 dollar salary. He succeeds Irl Tubbs after two losing seasons and resigns from Holy Cross where his team lost only one game this year. Anderson starred as an end for Notre Dame in 1918 1919 1926 and 1921.
A. J. Rankin and his daughter Mrs. Donald Bell were almost overcome by gas at their South Marion avenue home this morning. A leak in an exterior gas pipe allowed fumes to fill the basement. they were helped upstairs and are recovering well aside from nausea and weakness.
Funeral services for Mrs. Joseph M. Chittum were held at St. James church in the Richmond area with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She died following injuries from an automobile accident near Billings, Montana, and had lived in Richmond and North Liberty. Survived by her husband and two brothers. one brother and two sisters preceded her in death.
Mt and Mrs George Van Gundy and daughters Mary Joan and Carolyn travelled to Peoria Illinois this afternoon after a weekend visit with J H Baird at the parental home.
Plans proceed for the eastern Iowa HI Y assembly to be held here in December. Dr W D Dwyer announces committees for regulation meals badges dinner program assembly picture local registration and evening entertainment with a committee of ladies arranging host homes for visiting boys and asks interested households to notify the Y M C A.
In Humboldt Nebraska Will Schroeder and his seven children tour towns with a self made orchestra. They earn up to 30 dollars on good days, a stark contrast to 44 dollars yearly at their peak farming years. The children learned to play by ear with Johnny 18 banjo and Helen 16 accordion among the others.
Relatives report the sudden death of George Schachner about 44 at his Anaheim home Saturday night. He was born in Wellman and left for California fifteen years ago. Survived by wife Ruth Chez of Richmond and two children Harley and Helen. Funeral plans are noted with relatives traveling to California.

Fire on the Fred Anwyl farm four miles northeast of Crawfordsville destroyed a tenant house and an adjacent building with all contents. The Floyd Hunt family occupied the house and were away in Missouri. alarms were raised but nothing could be saved. The origin is undetermined and insurance covered the contents and buildings. The farm is the former Thomas Anwyl place.
The Travis family welcomes Lawrence EK Travis his wife and 4 year old Peggy Joanne to Washington. Travis becomes local manager of the Iowa Continental Telephone Co succeeding Charles Crane who stays briefly for handover. The family moves into 606 West Main Street previously occupied by crane.

Secretary of State elect Karl G. Miller denied reports that 70 percent of motor vehicle department employees received dismissal notices.
