An employee from Farmers Savings bank in Beaman says a recheck shows $3,500 in cash missing after a Tuesday night burglary, far below the initial $5,000 figure. Approximately $12,500 in negotiable securities were also stolen.
The Dubuque toll of highway traffic fatalities reached 393 with the death in Mercy hospital of Henry J. Rausch Jr. 24 of Turkey River. Rausch died from injuries from a Wednesday automobile crash near Luxemburg.
A newborn girl to Mr. and Mrs. Don Welty at Hand hospital weighed 1 pound 14 ounces at birth and is in a warm incubator, listed as struggling for life but given a good chance. The birth occurred on Monday.
Cedar Rapids reports 31 typhoid cases linked to a single source a public meeting four weeks ago. Health officer Dr. V H Hasek says the outbreak is a mild epidemic under control with most cases mild and traced to the meeting.
L J Dickinson Republican filed with Secretary Robert O Brian detailing a 4914 56 expenditure in the race against Senator Guy M Gillette Democrat. A Friday stove fire in Ren Oak destroyed the home of Clifford Page. Mr Page, Mrs Page and their nine children fled in night clothes. One son reportedly ran nearly a mile to the fire station to report the blaze, but sleeping firefighters upstairs did not hear the alarm. another attendant contacted firemen by phone from a garage across the street.
The Journal reports the death of Jack Stinson a longtime newspaperman known in Washington. He once co owned the Winfield Teacon with Hinkle later sold his stake but remained with the paper. He had worked for the Journal in Washington and was admired for humor and writing. Funeral plans were not definite and services will probably be held.
Dr. Herbert J. Burgstahler, Cornell president, named guest speaker for Y's Men's Club next Tuesday. He will speak at 7 15 after dinner in the Community room of the Y M C A with out-of-city speakers committee led by John Lemmon arranging the event.
The Iowa governor commuted six life terms today and denied eight others. Harry Neely of Council Bluffs, 54, sentenced for the murder of his ex wife, was cut to 40 years. James Adams, 58, also of Council Bluffs, with a long murder sentence, received six years. All actions followed the parole board recommendations.
Gail Burkett a 33 year old inmate who escaped Sunday from a state prison camp at Woodward returned to police Thursday night citing scarce jobs and cold weather as reasons for surrendering He has eight years already served at Fort Madison penitentiary on a robbery charge and now faces likely recapture proceedings.
In Vatican City on November 26 Pope Pius XII rose from a sick bed for a short period. He moved to a private library to meet Cardinal Gentile after a heart attack the day before. He defied medical cautions saying better a vacant chair than a pope who does not fulfill the function.
Burkett reports the man planned to surrender today after spending his final funds on a Selma to Keokuk ticket to reach the penitentiary.
Washington announced that Americas' ambassador to Germany Hugh R. Wilson will be reassigned to the State Department as an advisor for an indefinite time. Sumner Wells said the move keeps Wilson as ambassador to Germany while he serves in foreign affairs advisory duties. Wilson may report to President Roosevelt in Warm Springs, Georgia before resuming Washington duties.

Marian Wheeler a 32 year old stenographer was shot and killed in an office at the Grand Central terminal building New York on November 26. The gunman unidentified killed himself in the same incident leaving police to investigate motive and circumstances.
W J Keifer 56 a longtime Washington county automobile dealer died last night at 9 45 at Washington county hospital after a heart ailment. Born near Richmond on September 6 1882 he moved to Washington in 1917 and built a long auto business. He leaves wife three daughters a brother and three sisters with one son dead. Police report an unidentified man shot in a hallway and then killed himself after a brief argument with Miss Wheeler as she arrived for work in room 766. Details of the murder and suicide were not immediately available.
The Internal Revenue department informed John Tomlin manager of the Washington office that the local office will close December 1. Tomlin will report to Ottumwa where he is replacing a single operator. The Washington Chamber of Commerce seeks to keep the outpost open citing community need and convenience. Tomlin and wife moved here earlier this year from Ottumwa where he built a strong record clearing over 600 cases.
Richard Hohl, head of the automobile drivers license examiners, urges Washington County truckers and chauffeurs to renew licenses for 1939. About 485 drivers exist. only six have renewed. Renewal must be completed by December 31 to avoid a full exam next year. before year end a vision test suffices. Hohl meets drivers at the county courthouse each Friday.
Lloyd Dale Hunt of Ainsworth and Helen E. Cole of Brighton obtained a marriage license at the clerk of court office yesterday.

The thirty-ninth annual International Livestock Exposition opens at 8 a.m. in the Union Stockyards. A record display features 14 667 top animals valued over 5 million dollars with prizes exceeding 100 000 dollars. The event runs with the hay and grain show and includes participants from 41 nations plus the United States Canada and Australia vying for the wheat king title led by Gordon Gibson of British Columbia.
