The Y Dairy Cattle Congress and International Belgian Horse Show in Waterloo posted a net profit of 544 dollars in 1940 with income 106332 and expenditures 105788 amid an infantile paralysis epidemic. Plans were filed for a 165000 one story exhibition hall armory and public auditorium with 8000 seating.
Iowa City residents of Hillcrest and the Quadrangle prepare a testimonial banquet on December 3 to honor Robert B. Rienow for seven years as dean of men. A portrait by Franela McCray of the art department will be presented as part of the tribute.
Osceola sheriff reports Richard Kekron 61, a retired resident, vanished after being seen Saturday night leaving his divorced wife Marcia Sekron’s home. He wore house slippers a thin sweater and no hat. Both individuals live alone.
The jury returned a verdict of 12348.30 for Mrs Erma Ert in her suit against Waldo Swartzendruber and Orville Morrison over a October collision northwest of Wellman. Evidence showed back injuries claimed as permanent. Trial began last week with closing arguments yesterday.

In London British forces engaged two Italian battleships and many destroyers in the Mediterranean, chasing the enemy at high speed toward their base.
Joe Digney of Riverside started a 30 day term in county jail after being sentenced by Mayor Ed J. Yessy of Riverside for intoxication.
Clarence Heisdorffer of Richland reports an automobile accident near the river bridge at Brighton. He was blinded by a truck’s lights and driven into a ditch, where his car struck a guy wire. He suffered a nose laceration and head bruises.
A decree of divorce was granted by Judge Frank Heehly in the Loretta Elizabeth Cole versus Basil Norwood Cole case. Seven new citizens and one who had lost citizenship by marriage were granted papers at a naturalization hearing before District Judge M. H. Kepler in Charles City.
Paul Peiffer 64 of Washington dies at University hospital Iowa City from injuries suffered in a Nov 9 crash near North Liberty. His son in law Ed Wittetoe was killed. Funeral 9:30 at St James Church with burial Elm Grove. Rosary at Peiffer home. Survived by wife five children and 13 grandchildren.
Members of the Washington county selective service board organize records for the first registrants headed to Des Moines for a year of military training. Walter Lloyd Jackson and George Harold Miles prepare to join, with bus departures set for 6 10 Thursday morning.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted unanimously to postpone action on bills to permit American financial aid to Great Britain. The move came after Senator William H. King urged quick action to repeal the Johnson Act and the Neutrality Act banning loans and credits to Britain.
A. L. Duensing announced plans for a Friday evening report meeting on the Farm Bureau membership drive. The meeting is set for 7 30 at the YMCA with no heavy program but entertainment. All Farm Bureau members and workers are urged to attend with their families despite weather and road conditions.
President Roosevelt told Chairman Martin Dies that ultimate responsibility for actions against the fifth column rests with the executive department. An exchange of telegrams between Roosevelt and Dies at Dies’ Orange Texas home preceded a conference set for Friday in Washington.
Judge Frank Bechly swiftly sentenced four inmates in Washington County. Bernard OConnor and Arnold Lukovsky received up to ten year terms. Lukovsky already faced prior felony, OConnor parole set. Earl Granger and Mrs Helen Stevens faced vehicle theft sentences. Granger had past terms, Stevens 24 with no prior record.
1941 Auto Plates will go on sale at the county treasurer’s office next Monday December 2. The treasurer expects brisk business and has reserved plates for applicants who already prepaid. Bring old certificates or know current numbers to aid processing.
Last year the county raised 1000 from Christmas Seals with 375 sent to the State Association and some to the National Tuberculosis Association. Monthly x ray screenings found five active TB cases and one lung cancer case, with family contacts also x rayed. The program, funded by Seals, emphasizes early detection and treatment to curb spread.
Lola Land of Chicago 22 was the most seriously hurt among five taken to the county hospital after a two car collision on road 2 five miles east of Washington caused by packed snow. Land suffered a fractured right wrist and a broken rib. Roy Wood of Ainsworth skidded and crossed the highway in front of Anthony Pagorek of Chicago who was uninjured. Edna Land inPagorek’s car had a cut on her right foot. Mr Wood and his wife and their son Glenn had head bruises and cuts. Mrs Wood also suffered shock.
Fifty four political prisoners including former Premier George Argescanu were executed in the Sihla prison courtyard in Bucharest for leadership role in suppressing the Iron Guard. Ion Gigurtu was among arrested supporters of King Carol's regime. The executions followed Codreanu’s death two years earlier.
The annual union Thanksgiving service will be at 10 tomorrow in the Presbyterian church with involvement from multiple churches. Dr R C Keagy will deliver the sermon, the Presbyterian choir will lead music under Mrs Henry Shields, and the program includes scripture, prayers, solos, and offerings for the YWCA.
