Iowa’s Burlington naval reserve unit with 104 enlisted men and three officers is activated for deployment. The tentative departure is December 16, and the group will be stationed aboard a destroyer on the Pacific coast under Ensign Ailek, the present commanding officer.
Marshalltown city council votes to support the Veterans of Foreign Wars in forming a bicycle club to license bicycles and enforce state laws for riders.
Tipton consolidated school will remain closed this week due to rising scarlet fever cases. Nearly 20 cases are reported in the community and Mayor J. K Morton has asked that public gatherings be suspended.
Davenport reports the Scott county board of supervisors has reversed its plan to reopen the courthouse after the Governor's Thanksgiving day ruling. The building had been closed last Thursday under presidential timing, drawing criticism as political maneuvering.
The new Wesley Methodist church in Mason City, costing about $34 600, was dedicated debt free after a year long building campaign. The dedication service was led by Bishop J Ralph Magee of Des Moines with Dr Paul Arnold Anderson serving as pastor.
Kd J Hurley will direct the Washington county old age assistance program succeeding Walter G Conner who will join a cavalry unit for year of training. Hurley has served since 1938 in the department and has worked in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids before moving with his wife to 115 West Madison Street. Mrs Bailene Johnson remains as assistant.
The mayor publicly endorses the annual Christmas Seals sale, urging every citizen to buy and use the one penny seals during the holiday season to fund the national effort against tuberculosis. He frames the effort as a community duty for personal and public welfare.

By latest counts 615 members enrolled, nearly half of 2000 county quota due by Saturday, Nov 30. Reports from Riverside, Katona, Hrighton and others pending as road conditions slow progress. Donations listed from multiple organizations and 100 percent households named.
A Chamber of Commerce committee outlined plans to complete Christmas decorations in the Washington business district by Saturday under Preston Wolf. Central Park will feature arches with greenery, a silver star, illuminated trees around the fountain, and wreaths at park corners. About 150 small trees will adorn electrolier brackets along business fronts near the park with evergreen ropes and banners completing the display.
A car driven by Glenn McCall of Washington ditched on a primary road three miles west of Columbu Junction due to packed snow. Passenger George Baker, also from Washington, was injured and taken to county hospital to assess shoulder injury. McCall unharmed and car damaged. A separate morning collision at North Marion avenue and West Fifth street involved Henrietta M. Whittaker and J. F. Leinen never, with Whittaker slightly bruised.

Mrs. Rose Reid, county Red Cross roll call chairman, asks all roll call workers in every town and school district to report by Wednesday afternoon. The roll call must be completed this week with about half of the 2,000 quota already reported.
Washington will mark Thanksgiving as a holiday with most business houses closed all day. The Presbyterian union service at ten o'clock will lead to noon or evening dinners in hundreds of homes. Food stores open until ten, drug stores noon to four, banks closed, and post office hours adjusted for rural deliveries.
In keeping with tradition the Journal will be issued at noon on Thanksgiving day Thursday November 25. The notice confirms the holiday scheduling for the publication.
The Senate approved the Walter Logan bill 27 to 25 granting federal courts power to veto rules of quasi judicial agencies including the NLRB. Passage followed chamber debate and sent the measure to conference with the House which approved a different version. Library will be closed all day Thanksgiving.

The Erh va Swartzendruber personal injury case moved to argument today after days of testimony. Evidence wrapped up shortly before five yesterday. A Baldrige of Washington opened for the plaintiff, followed by Bray of Oskaloosa for the defendant. Jurors expected to receive the case this afternoon.
United Press reports fierce fighting as Greek troops reportedly take Pogradec on the shores of Lake Oc yida on the Argyro kastron Porto Edda road. British and Italian accounts clash over coastal landings and the status of Greek advances.
The first group of 222 Iowa youths arrives at Fort Des Moines for a year of peace-time army training. Induction will begin at noon Wednesday at a rate of 74 men daily for three days. After induction the men go to Fort Snelling Minnesota for initial training and later to a southern camp.
