In Wichita Kansas the Santa Claus phone line at Towne East was shut down by Southwestern Bell after overwhelming demand. Initially one line born 1,500 calls per hour. later five lines handled 7,000 calls hourly but caused widespread outages and 200 complaints per hour. Santa urged kids to write or visit in person.

Holiday toll climbs as Thanksgiving deaths mount nationwide
United Press International reports a Sterling Heights man and his family were en route to Thanksgiving when a wrong way crash on I 75 killed Richard Reiff 44 and Lester Owens 59. Six relatives were seriously injured. The holiday death toll nears the Safety Council estimate of 450 to 550 for the period starting Wednesday at 6 p.m. and ending Sunday at midnight. A tally shows 114 traffic deaths along with 13 fire 4 plane deaths total 131 others nationwide. Indiana reports a woman and a freight train collision and Missouri notes a mother and child killed when a car pulled in front of a semi with two others injured.
